Double standards, wild assumptions and conclusions are always entertaining to read when a new generation is on the horizon. It's like the same kind of people, who in their little world, chose to believe the Wii wasn't competing with 360 and PS3. Ask Sony who their competitors are.

Going back to digitally downloaded games, the big problem I see here is that with physical copies of games, I can at least sell them along with my PS3 if/when I decide to do so. Can I do that, at this point in time, with PSN purchases? No. The fact that they're on your account, their records, etc. and Sony is basically saying all that money you spent on PSN will go to waste unless you keep your PS3 is BS. That is completely unacceptable and all gamers/consumers should be miffed about that.

Simply put, whether it's Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Steam/Valve, Google, Apple etc... You can't make a push for digital and then simply say all your purchases will be useless once the new hardware is out. If they're going to do that, they better have a way for us to sell these digital goods.

I sold my ps3 after only getting 2 series and beating them, God of War and Uncharted.

Anyways back to what you said. This has baffled me how many people are like glossing over this. This is a big deal. I buy a lot of my games on steam now, as I hardly play my xbox anymore, but if Steam came out with some new program that got rid of the old program and said that non of the games I bought will play on the new program, I would be PO. Sure people are saying "just kept your ps3" but come on, how many of you are actually going to go play your ps3 let alone kept it? I think that is probably why I am more of a PC gamer now, I can't get slap in the face like this.

Heck I was able to load up star trek birth of the federation, on my pc! haha. That game is like 15 years old or something like that.

I'm not saying ps4 going to be bad, pretty sure it will be really great, but I just don't understand that part of it. Especially if you spent a lot of money on games for that. I guess it has something to do with the new tech in it, but if you build a new pc, it doesn't affect your games. All of that is probably above my head lol.

If PC had NFL I wouldn't even consider a console...
While a lot of games I don't play at release (only a select few) when I do get them for 10.00 or less compared to the still "used console game price of 44.99 or lower I smile.

While I guess the whole Wii not competing vs MS/Sony is a little far fetched (I was in that little world Flawless so hush! ) I still feel they have a strong enogh in house projects that they will be ok.
I just don't understand that IF they were looking at MS/Sony as competitors why keep coming out with systems that are a step behind (power etc.. wise)
Either way give me Zelda and other Nintendo games and I'll be ok

Just wish E3 would get here....

OS changes have killed games, there are games that were killed by the switch from the DOS monolithic kernel to the NT hybrid kernel. Apple killed games all the time, with radical OS changes and hardware changes. Intel had originally planned for Itanium to replace x86 before AMD came out with x86-64 which Microsoft chose to support instead. We could easily see Microsoft supplanting x86 with ARM or something else entirely, switch kernel architecture, or both.

What Sony sold you was a PS3 game, digital or not, and any assumption you might play that on something other than a PS3 was flawed.

those are some pretty ridiculous expectations. Why would you expect to use software designed for one device on a completely different device? Makes no sense.

It's ridiculous for someone to want to be able to play their digitally bought games on Sony's own consoles? I think not.

It does suck, but it is simply not possible to run PS3 software on a PS4. That is the important part to remember here. It was vastly important for the whole gaming world to move to the x86 architecture. The entire game world will grow leaps and bounds by the move the x86 it's importance cannot be overstated. The downside is no disc BC or PSN purchases on the PS4, when you look at it in the proper perspective it is a no brainer. Also this is not last gen where we moved from SD to HD and such a thing really mattered. Just use your PS3 for discs and PSN purchases, it is such a simple fix we cannot expect to hold the gaming world back exponentially when the small problems with the transition can be fixed so easily.

Sony already mentioned THEY CAN do emulation/backwards compatibility but they have not yet decided on what exact method or if they will actually do it.

Basically, we should all be groovy with putting down all our money on digitally bought games and accept the fact that we can't play them anywhere else and neither can we expect to recoup some of that money because we can't sell our "collection." Right.

Here's the thing about Steam and popular PC games - if and when architecture changes, we can probably count on them updating these titles and play them again in the future. There's also various ways of emulation on the PC/Mac (both legal and illegal) so it's really not that worrisome for PC gamers to play old games.

Consoles are a different story and as time goes by, digital is going to be even more prominent. If everyone is going that direction, they better allow us to either a) keep our collection and play them on their hardware via whatever means possible or b) sell them for credit on their digital stores.

I'm getting a PS4, but I will continue to speak out on this issue. Stop acting as if gamers won't benefit from having access to their digital games on the latest hardware.

There are ways to keep playing games even after architecture, OS, etc. changes; it just takes a some effort. For example, I can still play 16-bit games like SimTower on Windows 7 with DOSBOX or VMWare Player. There are emulators out there for every architecture or Windows version from the beginning of gaming. Hell, a guy at work was playing with a Commodore 64 emulator on Linux while we were eating lunch. Also, how hard was/is it to put Linux on the PS3? Totally different architecture, but people found ways to make it work. BTW, I'm not recommending anyone actually do this or try it. If your curious, ask George Hotz how it went for him...

As for the PS4, what is stopping Sony from having PS1, PS2, and PS3 emulators built-in to the new consoles? Is it HDD space? I think Sony is sitting on a cash cow really. Here's how: 1) Have emulators built-in to new system with all Sony's old systems (already exists online); 2) Allow people to download ROMs for all games they bought through PSN; 3) Charge super cheap prices for getting new ROMs ($1 each); 4) Release a Sony Playstation brand external HDD (1TB for $85). The potential for a lot of cash flow is there. The only thing is, I don't know the amount of effort required to turn a game into a ROM.

Then again, Sony probably has PS3 inventory to "clean out". What better way to clear out the warehouses than tell people the new system won't be backwards compatible?

Good points. If I wasn't so fond of the Nintendo games I would pass on their systems. They are just so cut and dry fun for me and I'm rarely disappointed in them.
Can't wait for E3. I will miss day 1 but am off the next 2 days.

Thanks for the link. Things can change, however I never put an audio CD in the PS3, just transferred MP3's over via USB drive or network. So, not a major issue for me personally.

What specifically is sensational about it? No need to get so defensive, lol. They listed developers that don't even have PS4 dev kits as people making PS4 games or 'on board'.

I hope this mean the thumb sticks have more resistance? I hated how loose the PS3's felt.
