    What is Cloud?

I keep hearing all this stuff about The Cloud and Cloud gaming but what exactly is it? Also is it something you download on PC? I'm sure it's a really stupid question, but honestly no idea.

    "The Cloud" is Cloud Computing...

Essentially these companies will have a huge server farm where those computers can do processing and whatnot, offloading some of the work from the consoles.

I think Sony's using this to stream PS3 games to PS4, and Xbox One is talking about it for other processing aids to games (physics calculations, etc).

In general though, "the cloud" is an infrastructure on the internet that these systems will be able to access for benefits.

Does that help? I don't know exactly how the systems will use the cloud, but this is the general idea.

          Re: What is Cloud?

It's just a new "high tech" buzzword, really.

Some will say "the cloud" when "a bit of online storage" doesn't sound as sexy.

Some will say "it has to be connected to the cloud" when saying "it has to be connected to the internet for DRM".

Some will say "we are harnessing the power of the cloud" when they really mean to say "we aren't as powerful but with a chicken bone and a bit of voodoo we could be".

That's not to say there isn't an actual computing practice behind cloud computing, it's just that the term is, more or less, the new fancy buzzword.

Burns nails it. Hilariously put, but so true.

Can't wait to see all those physics glitches on games that have server hiccups, and missed hops to the routers.

Just a term for ambiguous online remote resources, either storage or processing.

Here's an example, this is similar to how Sony's going to be doing backwards compatibility (and I'd expect things like instant demos):

"The Cloud" is the modern day "blast processing"
