    My PS3 has finally died

Well it lasted me a long time with no problems but my PS3 has finally died. Few nights ago it randomly shut off on me so I called it a night. It worked fine the next few days and then again last night it randomly shut off on me and I got the Yellow Light of Death. Happened while playing COD both times. Now my PS3 can't get started up and my COD disc is still in the system so I can't even get it out to sell.

I've read the ways to fix this issue but I don't really want to crack it open and take a heat gun to it to try and fix it for a few more months. I've already ordered a PS4 but damn it's going to be hard to get through the next few months till that comes out. And I was just getting into the heart of my season in MLB the Show.

At this point I don't think it's worth spending the money to send it to somewhere to get fixed with the new systems coming out in a few months but it's frustrating that i'm going to have to play my N64 or SEGA to get my gaming fix, I got rid of my PS2 & PS1 so those aren't an option either.

RIP PS3, you will be missed.

I bought one that did the same exact thing yours is doing for $50. I opened it up and it was completely filled with dust. I cleaned it out and repasted the cpu and heatsink with thermal paste and it works like brand new. It took about 2 hours. If you are familiar with building PC's it's not a bad fix at all.

Fix it yourself if you can or find someone who does, there's plenty of people who fix them. I had a guy in Jersey City install a new blu-ray drive in one of my 60gb fatties and it wasn't very expensive. No reason to let it "die" when it can be resurrected.

Re: My PS3 has finally died

Mine died too, it was as well turning off without imput and then when I tried to turn it on it didnt.

I took it to an unofficial repair shop (the best repair shop for consoles here) and they only get it to turn on for an hour or less and then, turns off. They just charge one time if the problem persist, but my patience dried after the 2nd time. Will now try and sell some of its pieces (hard drive, optical reader, etc) to at least get something back.

Even if I have had really bad luck with current gen consoles (3 RROD & now this), as I am currently jobless, I am finding it very hard to be without any gaming console this time around.

Anyways, looking forward to get a job all while trying to find comfort on the ever approaching PS4 launch, as last year (when I had a job) fortunately prepared my self and saved for a next gen console buy ... have high expectations on next gen consoles, specially, on consoles improved quality of life span.

I'm not getting a Vita, i don't play video games to play it on a handheld device. I'm not 8 years old anymore, why use a Vita when I have a nice 60 inch?

That's why i'm skeptical about cracking it open and trying to fix myself. I'm not familiar with building PC's. I saw a step by step video on youtube about how to open up the PS3 and use a heat gun and thermal paste to fix it. After watching it i'm a little worried i'd find some way to screw it up and break or rip something.

I also need to buy a heat gun & thermal paste. I believe I can get thermal paste at a store like radioshack and that stuff is cheap, don't know how much a heat gun costs.

I've thought about doing this, just need to find someone near by who restores them. I have a fat boy, have had it since 2007 and never had a problem with it so I was disappointed this happened. Jersey City is about 30-40 mins from me and I use to go there to get MLB the Show earlier from a store in JC. What was the store you had fix your PS3?

I just don't want to send it to Sony because they'll charge $150 and send me a new one instead of my old one and then i'd lose all of my game saves and music and everything else I have on my current system. Plus it'd be at least a month without it anyway so at that point i'd be getting it around Sept and it'd be a new system without my saves so whats the point (other than to maybe turn around and sell it to back to someone).

I was all set to just move on but last night I started to decide that I can't give up on it that easily. Hopefully at worst i'm down the cost to repair it and probably a new Call of Duty game since my game is currently still in the system and I can't get it out.

Since today is a slow day at work I think I will be dedicating most of my attention to finding a nearby place that restores PS3s.

              Just think.

If you bought a 360 in 2007, this would be your 6th one!

No but really, I'm in the same boat as you.. except mines still working. Bought my in 07, but I just know it's going to go out any time. I don't know about that whole thermal paste thing, I've never had to use it.. but make sure if you take it someone, do hours of research because you don't need to get caught up with one of those places that temporarily fixes it and than expects you to bring it back every couple of months to nickel and dime you.

Funny enough, I bought an Xbox 360 in 2005 and got the Red Ring of Death and was still somehow able to sell it back and I put that towards a PS3 and bought that. 360 couldn't even give me 2 full years before I got the Red Ring of Death, PS3 lasted me almost 7 years with not a single issue.

I found a place in Denville, NJ which is about 40 mins North of me which isn't too bad, and they fix the Yellow Light of Death for around $50 so I think i'm going to try that out this weekend. Even if they fix it and it only lasts a couple of months, i've already paid for and bought a PS4 so come November I won't need my PS3 anymore anyways. But 3 & 1/2 months would feel like an eternity without getting some gaming in.

I didn't need a heat gun..The paste they used in production was lead-free and awful so the heatsink just came right off the processor.

I did the fix on my 60GB system. Lasted a month or so. If I had to do it all over I would have sent it to someone (NOT Sony) to fix.
My launch 360 did RROD but MS fixed free. Bad video card on my first Wii. Nintendo fixed free.
YLOD on PS3.. Sony wanted to charge me 120 (or 150 cant remember which)..

That has always given me a bad feelings towards Sony. Slowly getting over it but they should have fixed free as it was a known issue.

Yea i think Sony charges $150 and i've read that most of the time they just send you a completely new one which would defeat the purpose because i'd love all of my stuff since I don't have it backed up. I've also read stories about people getting it repaired or doing it themselves and it only lasting a few months but really that's all I need. Just get me to November is all I ask.

These were the vids I watched on youtube that seemed to have the most positive feedback from those who followed these steps... I just am not familiar with building PCs or these type of things so i'd be worried about accidentally ripping something or not putting something back correctly so I'd rather take it to someone who does this for a living.

Cleaned it all up nice and then new paste etc..
I even went out and bought a heat gun as I didn't have one.

And now that this brought that up... I wonder where I put it lol

I posted all the pictures on OS as I was going through it. Since been deleted.
I was happy it worked (And it really isn't hard at all).. but only lasted a month I believe.

Probably could have done it again and gotten better at it but was simply done with it at that point.

There is a thread (or 2) in here somewhere talking about the fixes etc...

You dont need to spread the thermal paste like that. You can put a pea sized dot in the middle and smaller ones in each corner, and it'll spread evenly when you place the heat sink back on.
