How to Speed up PS3 Downloads

Got some info to share. Whether it is old news or new to people in here, I wanted to share in case no one knew about this.

For those that don't know, I have stellar internet. I get any where from 55mpbs download to lowest around 45 down. Uploads are from 27 to 25 up. So my internet is fantastic.

On my Xbox 360 my downloads were always great but on my PS3 the store, downloading demos, system updates, etc where always sooo damn slow. It was the main reason I rather my 360 over my PS3, but no longer.

I recently discovered how to speed up the PS3 to Xbox 360 speeds.

To give you a example of how much this helped.

    My PC
    55 Down
    25 Up

    My PS3 Before changes
    800 kb down
    300 kb up

    PS3 after changes
    10 mpbs down
    8 mpbs up

It was going to take me about 15 hours to download Hitman which was 17 gigs. I did the change and downloaded Hitman (17 gigs), Little Big Planet Carting (7 gigs), X-Com (7 gigs), Saints Row 3 (7 gigs), Zen Pinball (400 megs I think), Runner 2, Machinorium, and Odd World all in 5 hours. That is close to 40 gigs in 5 hours. That is close to 133 megs a min continuously for 5 hours.

Now granted your internet speed will greatly affect your results. If you have poor internet from the get go, your performance increase will be hard to notice, but if you have excellent internet and struggling with slow PS3 then this should help you.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok the procedure will require you to use a proxy server such as a desktop PC or I'm assuming a laptop would work.

    1) Open up command prompt and run ipconfig /all so you can see your computers IP address, subnet, gateway, and DNS.

    2) Write these down

    3) Now go into your network center and go to your internet connect settings and choose the properties of your TCP/IPv4.

You want to manually set a static IP for this computer. Type in each area from what you wrote down.

Now you have a static IP on your PC.

    4) Now you need to go in and make it a proxy server.
    Download http://www.privoxy.org/

    5) Install it and choose for it to run at startup. Complete the install and make sure it is running in task bar.

    6) Right click the little blue privoxy icon in task bar and choose "Edit Main Configuration".

    7) Once the box opens up, scroll down to section 4.2. Right above 4.2 you will see a line that reads. "listen-address 127.0.0.1:8118", ONLY change that line! Nothing else in the text matters.

8). Change "listen-address 127.0.0.1:8118" to your PC IP address you set for the static IP. So as example it would read something like this "listen-address 192.168.0.202:8118"

    9) Go to file and click SAVE. Then close the editor.

    10) Make sure your computer is still able to connect to the internet. You are now done with everything needed to be done on your PC.

Next we will set your PS3 to run through the proxy server on your PC you just setup.

    11) Go to your PS3 settings and internet connection settings.

    12) Choose custom and go through everything on auto until you get to where it ask if you want to use a proxy. Choose YES.

    13) Set the proxy IP to the IP of your PC and the IP you wrote in the editor.

    14) Set the port to 8118

    15) Go through rest of setup until you see test connection. When you test two things can happen, it can work perfectly and go through fine and you are done.

If it receives a IP yet fails on the second step then you need to go back to your PC. Close Privoxy, reopen it, and then go run through the connection setup again on PS3 to test your connection again. Sometimes privoxy needs to be shutdown and restarted to receive the changes made.

    16) Another thing that can throw a failed second step is not allowing privoxy under your firewall. Go to your windows firewall and allow privoxy. This should clean up any kick backs you are getting.

That is it, enjoy your MUCH faster download speeds!!

Any questions let me know and I will do my best to help you out.

Good stuff. Will try this weekend.

Hopefully hoop jumping won't be required with PSN when the PS4 drops.
I hate to think I have to jump through hoops to get the same speed from LIVE without hoop jumping... especially when we'll be paying for PSN this go round.

    I won't be happy

Yea its flat out silly you have to run through a proxy to get faster speeds. I read about it and never wanted to attempt it since I had my 360 I used so much. Now that I'm 360-less and going to be a Sony only customer rocking a PS3 and PS4. I knew I needed to increase my speeds because my PS3 is going to become my main gaming device behind my PS4, plus for netflix reasons.

I was completely shocked with just how much it helped. Even the internet browser flies now. I wish I knew about this years ago because I'm pretty certain I would of never strayed away from Playstation 3.

Now with all that said, I do hope like you that PS4 is much more plug and go without all these unnecessary steps needed to be done.

this is great Phobia. I think the ps4 speeds will be better because the money you will pay for ps plus on the ps4 will go towards more regional servers to make downloading better. At least that is what I have heard.

Now compared to my PC speeds it is not great ImageUploadedByTapatalk1378081326.474891.jpg

But in terms of ps3 speeds the 15 down 8 up is pretty damn solid compared to what I was getting

                This is really cool!

I do hope that Sony can fix their problems though...they can't expect us to do this on PS4 can they?

Hmmm. Maybe I don't need to do this. Here are my speeds

It's weird because it seems to take forever to download something.

Edit: This might just be my browser speed?

                      Interesting

I'm gonna ask a pretty strange question lol. You are trying this with a wireless connection right? Direct hard wired in won't help any, you will be already pushing your max speeds. I should have stated that earlier but I just took it for granted people would know it was for wireless connections. Lastly, were you on a type 2 nat BEFORE the change? Type 2 is going to produce the results you are looking for, before I did a proxy my net type stayed at NAT 3 strict.

If you are on wireless and your speeds are the same that really surprises me. 15 down is good for the PS3 from what I have been able to deduct.

Also try running a speed test from the browser, I got two different results from the browser and the test connection. The test connection was showing around 10 down, 8 up while the browser was showing 15 down 7.5 up. Granted connections do flex.

So would this cause me not to be able to connect to my work wifi? I can't seem to get on the net. But I know its up and working.
