So instead of buying disks we're buying flashdrives for 60 bucks. What is the point of that?

Only way going all digital will be remotely acceptable (negate the internet issues, data caps, accessibility, DRM bull****) is if those prices came down significantly and those publishers would never want that to happen.

Did music companies force you into buying MP3s as well?

Digital downloads does not necessarily mean you can't play if you are not online. I have been able to play my XBOX 360 games on demand while my internet was down. It depends how the console and game makers structure their stuff.

I do agree with the trade-in aspect as well as the need for lower prices for digital games though. Also, I have a 60gb limit on my internet so that's another issue.

          Well....sort of.

Single song downloads and the ability to transfer those files from one place to another pushed it along and made it more palatable though.

..and mostly because of the devices used to listen to music weren't conducive to CD's any longer.
When the console becomes smaller than a DVD....now we're talking!

If that would ever happen, I just wouldn't buy a new gaming system.

I think next generation physical games cost $70-80 while digital cost $60.

I just see them raising physical games instead of lowering digital ones.
              MLB: Texas Rangers
              Soccer: FC Dallas, Fleetwood Town
              NCAA: SMU, UTA
              NFL: Dallas Cowboys
              NHL: Dallas Stars
              NBA: Dallas Mavericks

People thought the games were going to go up to $70-80 this time around and they didn't. Companies know they'll lose money if they go that route.

Re: Disk consoles are not necessary anymore

I found it funny that before the PS4 was released, there were some rumors that the PS4 would have no optical drive. As we all know now, these rumors were bull, but there's a reason for that. The used game market is HUGE in Japan and digital was one reason that the PSP Go failed spectacularly.

Basically every place that sells videos will buy and sell used games, even small mom and pop stores in the country. And they are extremely strict with the quality. A single scratch decreases the value by a ton, and there are some places that will only buy games in mint condition. Super Potato, for example, has a great selection of Super Mint condition games - which are considered like brand new, but they also have multiple copies of games which are priced differently depending on their condition.

I will NEVER support diskless as the only option for one simple reason: in doing so you are giving up control of your media and are then subject to depending upon the company to allow you access to it. No sir, that doesn't work for me.

I am a-ok with the option to give people a choice but i wouldnt ever support a console that doesn't give the consumer a choice and tries to force a diskless system upon the consumer as the only option..

As it gets more expensive to make games a price increase will happen. I'm kinda shocked it didn't happen this time but in 5-10 years I think they will increase it.

Not really, thats what micro-transactions and paid DLC are for...to keep the price at $59.99. Studies have consistently shown that is the breaking point for most consumers...

                              Explain the bolded for me.

A simple firmware update can render both physical and digital games useless.

I'm all for options. But if you don't think they'll push digital going forward, that's not realistic.

I'd even bet that the next gen consoles will be strictly digital.

Sorry you'll be left on the sidelines.

If I'm left on the sideline then a huge mass of gamers will be as well... Re the bold...There's a difference in a company actively disallowing you to use legally bought software, which is practically never done, and companies choosing to no longer support older software, which happens all the time. Plus with a physical copy one can always play it offline although a mod may have to happen to do so, whereas when the data is not in your hands a company can 100% dictate your access to some or all of it AND they can even choose to charge you for access to it if they so choose.

Possession is nine tenths of the law still applies here and progress, as you say, in this direction anyways, is NOT inevitable at all, so long as there is competition. One only has to look at the about face Microsoft had on the Xbox One DRM and digital access to see that my friend.
