Getting the best audio from your PS4/X1 when using a high end receiver?

    Hey all,

I own a very high expensive and very end 7.1 surround system and I am just wanting to make sure I am using it to get the best sound from my consoles.

What are you guys who have really nice receivers and running your consoles to using in terms of sound for games and movies? Linear PCM? DTS? Dolby?

My receiver is the Onkyo TX-NR709 and the sound modes alone run 4 pages alone. Here is the URL if anyone wants to see the various modes (pages 36-39)

    http://www.eu.onkyo.com/downloads/1/...X-NR709_En.pdf

I am always wondering if I'm not using the right mode.

I own both PS4 and Xbox One so I'm eager to hear from both camps..

I'm far from an expert at this stuff, but I did try to do some research when I got my receiver (mine's not really high-end, but it is 7.1, Onkyo HT-R2295). From what I found, have the PS4 set as Linear PCM and Xbox One at 7.1 uncompressed and have the receiver setting as Multich.

Exactly what Dan said. Other settings will change the sound quality but you can always play around with them and see what you like

I have a large Marantz 7.1 surround receiver. I use the optical audio inputs and I just scroll through the many surround modes until I find the one that sounds best to me.

Yep I used to have a Sony Rec but it didn't have HDMI sound passthrough so I had to use optical.
I then got a Onkyo TX-NR535 and settings at Linear PCM.

Eventually I will move to a 7.1 system after other priorities are completed lol

Maybe not for this thread, but is it horrible to pass my audio through my TV? right now my HDMI goes through the soundbar to my TV, but thinking I could have the sound come from my TV in case I ever want to use HDMI to attach my PC or another streaming device (for instance).

No biggie, and I may not need to change things, but this thread got me thinking...

You shouldn't be able to tell a difference. You would have to get an optical cable for it to work though and run that from the TV to the soundbar.

I have optical cables from my older setup (used to have a receiver). Might swap it out just to make it easier....Thanks for the input...I'm not really a audiophile, but hate hamstringing myself as well...

The soundbar sounds great for our room, and takes away the need for wires/surround sound satellites.

Don't switch it so sound emanates from the TV (like from your PS4 to your TV to your soundbar) to your sound bar as most TVs do not output anything but stereo. This is a mistake I made when I was younger. The way you have it now is good.
