Sportsball 2172! - a new sport, where all the teams of the NFL, the NBA and MLB have abandoned football basketball and baseball to form a new league, a super league

set 150+ years in the future, imagine playing a game say like, the Packers versus the Yankees, or Lakers versus Raiders, or Cubs versus Bears.

I'm a big picture guy, now someone else can invent a new sport that has the potential to be more popular than baseball basketball and football combined.

starting to flesh this out a little more, with inspiration inspired by a dream last night.

this new game has 4 positions: Xback, Circleback, Squareback and Tri-fielder.

I'm hellbent and whiskey bound tonight so I'm expecting further ''inspiration''

in the year 2172, a traditional Sportsball has evolved into the size of a baseball, sans the 108 stitches
rather instead it has football laces going around half of the outside of the sphere's circumference
and orange in colour, like basketball orange

the official professional Sportsball League ball has a hard cueball center
while the NCAA has opted for the less violent, softer version, inflated with air in the sphere's bladder

in the year 2101:
THX 1188 broke the artificial intelligence barrier by becoming the first robot to compete in Sportsball. after 3 years of domination of the rest of the league, THX, a Squareback, mysteriously disappeared forever. some suspected foul play but with no evidence and no proof, the disappearance remained a mystery. THX was inducted into the Sportsball Talent Gallery (equivalent to a Hall of Fame) in 2111 and #88 was retired league wide forever more.

SPORTSBALL

rundown on SPORTSBALL:
each team fields 7 players, 1 Squareback (a sort of goalie-type dealio) 2 Xbacks, 2 Circlebacks and 2 Tri-fielders. The playing field can be indoors or outdoors, played on dirt, grass, artificial or real, or any combination of the 3.
the object of the game revolves around 1 briefcase full of money on a 4 foot high semi-circular base set against a 6'' high wall, 80'' in length, with both team's Squarebacks trying to stop the other team's 6 players from knocking over the briefcase with a thrown ball.

when the briefcase is successfully knocked over, it automatically springs open with cash popping up & out everywhere. this is called a Moneyshot. the time limit on the game is 5 rounds of 10 minutes each, though there are a couple ways to end the game earlier than 50 minutes. this is called Sudden Death and happens when a Moneyshot is also a Killshot. a Killshot occurs if you go up by 10 Moneyshots at any point in the game (a sort of Mercy Rule) or the first team to 20 Moneyshots automatically wins. Sudden Death.

the briefcase 'Squarea' is squared off with lines on the grounds. in this Squarea, only the 2 team's Squarebacks may enter. they each must wear a fielders mitt on both hands and cannot throw the ball at the briefcase themselves, but can get it back out to their team's other 6 players any way they can, as long as they don't leave the Squarea or remove either hand's glove.

in the immediate area beyond the Squarea are the 2 team's 4 Xbacks (2 Xbacks per team). they are also in a lined off area in which they cannot leave. beyond this area is a third lined off area where the 4 Circlebacks reside. they cannot enter into the Xbacks area and cannot leave out beyond their area, which is out of bounds. the last positions filled are Tri-fielders, who are the only players allowed to go out of bounds to retrieve the ball. when a ball goes out of bounds, the clock stops but play does not.
no player may hold a ball longer than 10 seconds.

Tri-fielders are the only players approved to go out of bounds. they are also approved to enter the Circleback area AND the Xback area. hence the "Tri-". they are not allowed to enter the Squarea though (where the Squarebacks and briefcase reside).

Squarebacks must wear fielders mitts on both hands, either-or baseball and/or hockey. baseball catcher's mitts are also approved
ALL players must wear a helmet, be it a football helmet, baseball helmet, hockey helmet or even a motorcycle helmet. Concussions are taken very seriously by Sportsball but are inevitable as in any contact sport.
players are approved to push other players out of their way but are not allowed to hold or tackle another player at any time.

Punches, headbutting, tripping, kicking, biting and/or spitting are also not allowed. Body blocks are approved however.
the authority officials to enforce the rules are called Reumpf's.

the briefcase full of cash is professional league only, colleges and universities use paper confetti.
on top of the wall behind the Squarea sits stands for Sportsball Fanatics. stands also surround the rest of the playing field

the total dimensions of the Squarea, Xback area and Circleback area part of the field are 80''-X- 40''.
as one can see, this 80''-X-40'' fits rather nicely within a basketball court

the dimensions of the Squarea are as of now, yet-to-be-determined.

there is no set dimensions of out of bounds for Tri-fielders to go. these out of bounds dimensions are ''Grounds Rules'' and a part of homefield advantage

I've actually been having fun with a similar exercise lately.

A few years ago I posted in this thread about wanting to see Shadowbane 2, and I've been thinking about what that would look like...or even just an original MMO taking some of the core mechanics of SB.

Genre: High Fantasy MMORPG

Style: PvP, Conquest, Sandbox, RPG


PvP:

The game would be open world, non instanced, with full player vs player action available at all times. No separate servers for PvE or being able to flag your character as not willing to PvP. When you go out into the world there will always be a risk.

There will be a few save zones though, primarily designed to protect new players. The starting area would be considered safe, and all pvp will be turned off, and then there will be a few NPC cities around the world where PvP will also be turned off in those zones. This is primarily just to give new players an avenue to get their feet wet with the combat and meet up with others and get sorted into a guild.

Conquest:

Players will be able to work together to build player cities with walls, vendors, and a place to gather with your friends. The buildings in this city will be invulnerable from attack in most cases (so that you don't have to protect your city every single night), but they can be made vulnerable by another group of players through a magical item (in Shadowbane this was called a Bane Stone). When this item is used against a city, then the defender will be able to set a time (within a few days) of when that item will activate. At that time, everything in the city becomes vulnerable and the attackers will be able to lay siege to it, attempting to destroy it/take it over. The defenders will try to keep the attackers out while also working to destroy the magical item that is making the city vulnerable. The siege ends when either the city or the item is destroyed.

*Note* Sometimes these fights will only consist of 10-15 on each side, but larger guilds could see fights occur with over 100 on each side of the siege. The main idea behind this mechanic is that A.) large fights that last for a long time are a lot of fun. B.) PvP should have consequence. If you start provoking another group of players then you should be prepared to fight for it.

Loot:

The system would allow for inventory loot on death. If your character dies, then all of the items that are equipped (armor, weapons, accessories) would stay with the character through death, but any items that he was carrying (gold/items he had picked up) would be lootable by the winner of the PvP engagement.

*Note* Continuing with PvP with consequence. I'm not really a fan of most "open" pvp games where the only thing at stake are things like PvP rank for the winner and having to go back to your last binding spot as the loser. I want to encourage PvP through the potential rewards and adrenaline of a sandbox enviornment.

Also, while I want there to be consequences, I don't want them to be overly punitive. I'm not a fan of things like permadeath and full loot. I think that they end up impacting several facets of a PvP game unfavorably.
#1 - Discourage PvP. That's especially the case in a permadeath situation, as you don't want to completely lose your character and all the time that you have spent on him, but even in a full loot environment it would make people think twice before engaging in PvP
#2 - I think it impacts some of the things that you can do with the economy and crafting. If you lose everything (including your equipment every time you die), then you either have to make it so there is little combat difference between a naked character and a fully equipped character OR you have to make it so that high level equipment is very easy to obtain because if it's hard to acquire then people are will either be discouraged from PvPing or only wear cheap gear most of the time to avoid having to grind for that good gear all over again.

Customization:

A very high degree of customization will be available

Race - Multiple races such as human, elf, dwarf, etc...each race will have natural bonuses to certain attributes (ie: an elf will have naturally higher magical power but lower hit points).

Classes - Classes will be broken out between base class and specialization.
Base classes will include Tank, Healer, Mage, Rogue. You select this at character creation and this will impact what specializations are available for you.

Specializations will be sub classes that you can train into. Once you pick one, you can't change it. If you're a base class mage, then you can specialize into different types of mages like being a wizard or a warlock, or if you're a rogue then you can be a ranger or an assassin. There will be 5 or 6 specializations for each base class.

Stat Allocation - As you level up you will be given points which you can use to then decide how to strengthen your character. For anyone who has every played a game like Diablo, this would be like adding points to constitution to increase your base health, or increasing your intelligence to increase magic power. Further, instead of being a new skill at certain levels like you would in many other MMO's, you will have to select which skills to train. You will do this via another type of point that you get each time you level up. Additional points into any specific skill/spell will increase the potency of it

Equipment - Standard to most MMO's. The only difference is that equipment will not be repairable. After it has suffered a certain amount of damage (via character deaths) then it will break and you will have to replace it (more on this in crafting).

*Note* - There are two key areas here.
#1 - This game will abide by the "holy trinity". There won't be 30 difference class combinations that all work as hybrids able to dish out damage and heal at the same time. If you want your group to be able to heal itself then you're going to need at least one of the various healer classes in it, and if you want o be able to dish out some massive AOE damage then you're going to need some kind of mage. I think that the focus on characters being able to do a bit of everything over the last 15 years in MMO's is one of the reasons why the games have become less group focused.
#2 - Character customization is probably the most important part of a MMO to me. I hate the idea that if I make a Black Mage in Final Fantasy 14, then I'm going to have the same attributes, the same spells, the same armor, and the same rotations as every other Black Mage in the game. I want people to be able to experiment with different combinations of attributes, skills and armor, and for 3 people with the same race/class combination to have 3 totally different characters (An all out direct damage wizard, a wizard who specializes in damage over an area, and a wizard who can do a bit of both but is not a master at either).

Pirate Raids:

These will be timed events that occur at random intervals (though the defenders would still get to select from a selection of times that are convenient to them). They will work very similar to the PvP siege mechanics, but in this case a group of NPC's will the attackers, and the events will be timed instead of just waiting until someone achieves total victory.
When the pirates initiate their attack they will start to destroy your city like a typical siege, but in the background they will also be looting its valuables (gold/crafting materials). You sooner you kill the attackers the less of your city gets looted (even if you do kill them though, they still get to take off with whatever they were able to acquire for the duration of the raid).

*Note* - I thought that this would be a cool mechanic because it's a kind of raid/horde mode that plays on large scale sieges (which will be a primary part of the game). The pirates would be tuned to reflect the relative power of each guild's city (ie: a 10 person guild wouldn't face the same challenge as a 40 person guild). Aside from being a fun horde mode, it would also help regulate the in game economy. In every MMO ever, players start to stockpile money and materials as the game goes on, creating rampant inflation. In this way, even if you win the raid, you're still going to lose some of your stockpiles.

Crafting:

The best equipment in the game will only be available through crafting. Materials in the game will be easy to obtain, but hard to stockpile due to the various mechanics (pirate raids looting your stockpiles, equipment degradation forcing you to continuously make new gear) .

Summary:
If it wasn't obvious, this game will work almost like a geo political simulator. Alliances will be formed, enemies will be made, and lots of large scale fights. Playing solo will technically be possible, but it's not going to hold your hand through that experience like many other modern MMO's do...yes I've put some thought into this

I know people generally prefer games with scripted stories as they can be a bit more cinematic and whatnot, but give me a POI game that is completely procedural and forces the user to solve some real complex puzzles to save whoever it is that needs saving. The game would need action, but wouldn't even need to be action focused, though.

I'd have a blast spending 4 nights in a row just investigating all links I could find to figure out who I needed to protect and then following them throughout their daily schedule to try and figure out what the threat to them was. If I had to spend 10 hours doing investigative and reconnaissance work for every 1 hour of action, I'd have an absolute blast.

I have been watching the Spawn Animated Series on HBO. I see why my parents didnt let me watch it back in the 90s. It's graphic, dark and gritty. I'd love to see an Insomniac or Rocksteadys take on the character. There's a lot there. I like that Spawn is not a cookie cutter "good guy" superhero. I'd love to see what kind of gameplay can come out of his guns, chains and cape.

Couple of another movie-based suggestions:

Edge of Tomorrow - this has been on my mind for quite a long time now but it seems like we're getting something very similar in Returnal, so...

Pacific Rim - this could have been done either as a hack-and-slash (only in giant proportions), pure fight and not much else kind of game, or as an open world adventure with timed quests between Kaiju attacks. The quests could be both mandatory (complete the quest to get resources and items necessary to survive next fight), or optional (complete the quest and get even better stuff); and you could travel and fight all over the world, in different locations, from Hongkong to Sydney to Cape Town to Maldives to San Francisco (imagine defending the Bay Area from an ugly oversized Kaiju buried knee-deep in a howling waters of the Pacific Ocean in the shadow of a magnificient Golden Gate, lol).

The Last Unicorn - a very underrated story based on a very underrated, but exceptional book, this would have been best served as a linear game imho. Make the graphics either match the movie or at least take a strong inspiration from it, get the story and gameplay right, and you could have a gem of a game on your hands.

Would like to see a Max Payne remake. I really like Max Payne 3, but that was a good ending to the series. I would like to see Max Payne remake. I believe Rockstar still owns the IP since buying it from Remedy. If Rockstar isn't going to do it any new IP, at least take advantage of older IP by doing remakes/remasters. But, Rockstar never seemed interested in doing remakes/remasters. Rockstar has enough studios where they could have a studio work on a side project and not just put all hands on deck on GTA

That was essentially Max Payne 3 lol.

But you can make a good single player Bodyguard game. Almost similar to Max Payne, where the protagonist is former police or military hired by someone of importance. You get Intel of possible assassins and survey the area. It would have to be politically based

Not a dream game, but as I watched Space Jam: A New Legacy, it got me thinking about how surprising it is that they didn't capitalize off of that with a video game as well.

I know there are other arcade basketball games like it, but when you have Looney Tunes as well that can sell.
