I'm not picking on you personally when I say this, but it has to be said, so please do not take personal offense.

Is it just me, or does everyone who wants to be anyone in the rap community name those 5 names when discussing their favorite MC's? It's as if those 5 names are the key to the inner sanctum of the rap game. Those names are to rap with the number 3 is to a guy's sex total.

It's as if some people think, "These are 5 of the most highly renowned artists of all-time, why don't I name them as my top 5?" I'm not knocking these 5, and in fact, I think all 5 of those guys are really good, it's just that everyone seems to think dropping those 5 names is going to earn them some respect for their taste.

I'm sorry, I had to vent.

Exactly, there is no way all these cats have Rakim as one of their Top 5's.

I see this is turning into a top 5 emcees thread real quick.

let me post mine..in no order

Nas - lyrically steal top notch
              Rakim - invented flow
Black Thought - one of the most underrated MCs alive
Common - Dude spits fire with gasoline for saliva
Kane - True Definition of a Vet, rumoured to have battle Rakim at one point, but no audio to prove it.....

"Run" was definately the best collab track last year. My favorite song on the Pretty Toney Album.

I've been a GFK nuthugger since the very beggining when he never took off his mask. Defitnitely one of the most underrated. Any MC who you got step into his world to understand gets a plus from me.

I dont really have a top 5 MC list. I appreciate and respect most for they're style. I dont care if you lyrics are the most complex or you drop the hottest punchlines, if your flow is nice, I'll listen.

thats the way IT SEEMS but some ppl do the exact opposite to try to sound like they are so original . i say who cares .like what u like

, ive been listening to hip-hop for +12 years , i honestly think those are the 5 best rappers ive ever heard . imo biggie was the most talented rapper ever but he only released two albums.
i can explain simple reasons why i name them in my top 5 rappers ever

jay has the best work . nas has the second best work. tupac showed the most emotion and is imo the deepest rapper ever . biggie was the most talented rapper ever. rakim was the most influential artist of alltime .

i really dont care who respects my taste in hip-hop .i post at gamespot and there are plenty of cool rap heads at the rap lounge and not many ppl like jay-z there the way i do( hes the best ever imo) , and i throw shots at them for thinking wutang is so great .just friendly ish talking we get along well. we dont have the same opinions but we respect each others taste .

There definatley is a difference, it depends on if you're looking at things subjectively or from a personal preference point of view. In your case the two "Top 5/Fav 5" might be the same, but for me it definately isn't.

For example, above I put Buckshot as my 3rd favorite rapper. I absolutely love his voice and his subject matter. But there is no way in hell I think he's the third best rapper ever to live.
