Anyone else getting a sort of Ender saga scenario? With the kids and the Others? Here's my thinking:
When Locke and Eko were in the Pearl, Locke turned on other TV's, and yet no image other than the Swan station showed up. This leads me to believe that the other station operators figured out that they were being watched. I'm thinking that maybe the "Others" are these operators...and have abandoned all except the station they were guarding.
When the tailies crashed, the "Others" came and took the kids and the "good people". They also took Walt, Claire (for her baby) and possibly will come after Sun if/when she gives birth. I'm thinking they are testing the kids to see if they have special powers, like Ender, they are looking for the one who will enable them (the "Others") to fight back against the enemy...in this case Dharma and Hanso. They have to be pissed that they were manipulated, just like Locke is fuming. Not to mention they are paranoid about the sickness (hence the blood drawing from Michael). They want a savior!
This then brings me to why they want the four other folks. Jack is a given, he's a doctor and if the "Others" are sick, then of course they want a doctor to heal them. Sawyer is a man who has no allegiances and would be a vital addition since his whole life is a lie. He could take on Dharma just to save his ***, and in the process save everyone else as well. Kate is similar, as she's wandered and escaped and is a wild one. Dharma might have a hard time keeping a leash on her. As for Hurley, well there's the numbers (his lottery win would be publicized) and his whole life since then has been one ounce of bad luck after another. The "Others" might feel that his bad luck might be their good luck.
Now back to Dharma and Hanso. I'm thinking they are a sinister conglomerate, think Halliburton times ten! They would know that the plane crashed due to the electromagnetic experiments on the island. They could create a "real world" cover story, and even import fake bodies for the grieving families. Since they have so much power, finding the names of those on Flight 815 wouldn't be too hard, and being able to funnel the names to those partaking in the experiment on the island (Desmond and the "Others") would also not be too hard. A quick Google search could reveal lots of info about everyone on board. That explains how the "Others" have their names and enough description to find them.
In all this, of course, is the wild card...Rousseau. She's just unlucky but her outsider status just might allow the main characters to avoid the quasi-sinister motives of the "Others" and eventually get rescued. The boat seen is either empty or houses Desmond, and the boat was probably that used by the replacement for the Pearl (three week shifts). The fact that in the previews that the pile of stuff behind Jack looked like the canisters used from the Pearl being beside the point.
Thoughts? After last night I'm really feeling that the discounted theories of purgatory, Hurley's mind, and group think psychological experiment are now fully eliminated from possibility. That what's happening is REAL, and that the "Others" are not as bad as we think. They are just pissed off that they were used by Dharma. I'm still not sure about the monster, but maybe it's some sort of nanomachine cloud. Who knows. I'm liking my theory of them looking for an uncorrupted child who has the power to save them, one they can mold to fit their needs. Everyone else has too much baggage. In essence the exact same reasoning of the adults in "Enders Game" by Orson Scott Card.
*EDIT: One other tidbit...Damon Lindeloff (co-creator and writer) has mentioned that the theme of Season Three will be "us versus them", but was coy about who "us" and "them" are. Wouldn't it make sense, looking at a narrative arc that the enemies of the main characters (the "Others") would turn out to be good guys and that the real threat would emerge, i.e. Dharma and the manipulative experimentation of the Hanso Foundation?
Another thought, regarding the flashbacks is that the links between them, unbeknownst to the main characters at this point, is what ultimately will allow them to fight back and win? I'm thinking next season we'll see flashbacks not of the main folks, but of Mr. Friendly, Ms. Clue, "Henry Gale", and possibly Rousseau. Wherever "Lost" ends up, insiders indicate the network plans to answer fans' prayers by radically revamping the show's air pattern. Skein is expected to air in two big chunks of originals -- one in the fall and one in the spring. ABC then could launch a new show in the "Lost" timeslot come January.
