    DirecTV question..

Hey guys, for awhile now I've been really unhappy with Charter digital cable/HDTV. I was wondering if any of you guys have DirecTV with HDTV/DVR? If so, how is it? I'm seriously thinking about it, but I've always heard that the service goes out everytime it rains, or the wind blows.

Hope to get some good feedback from you guys, thanks!

I have the HD Tivo receiver for Direct TV. Works great, never has gone out on me yet and the picture is awesome in HD (better than my Samsung HD box) Plus I can store up to 30 hours of HD content, which I've not even come close to yet. I got mine on sale the day after Thanksgiving for 399 and they are retailing right now at 699, so I think the price is starting to drop on them.

If you want local HD channels with Direct TV you most likely would need an over-the-air antenna to bring in the local digital feeds.

Thanks man, I was just cruising around the DirecTV website. It appears that they have my local channels, and are in high def. I'm waiting on an e-mail to confirm this. Thanks for the response though, it's been helpful.

Holic, if your tv market is Atlanta, then yes, DirecTV does now offer the locals in HD for you. That market just went live in the last 2-3 weeks I believe.

Your best deal is probably going to be to go get one of the new mpeg-4 receivers, model H20, at a Best Buy or something. This new receiver is required to receive the HD locals, and if you buy from one of those chain stores, for new subscribers the box will run you like 200 bucks, but there is a mail in rebate for the whole cost, so you get it for free in the end.

You also need to make sure the dish installed is an AT9 with 5 LNB's. This is the only one that will bring in a signal from the new satellites w/ HD locals. You may have to get this through DirecTV.

This is the only mpeg-4 receiver out currently. If you want an HD DVR unit, you either will have to buy an HR10-250, which is the old mpeg-2 one, which will NOT allow you to receive the HD local networks, or wait until next Spring, when the mpeg-4 ones should be available.

LOL. I just scheduled an install with Charter Cable in Asheville. I was looking at DirecTV, but I've had bad experiences with it at friend's houses in Staten Island during rain, snow, and extremely windy (35-40 mph) days. In those same situations, my Time Warner digital cable was still active.

I am in Atlanta and I get Fox in HD from DTV. That is the only local I get in HD. The rest I pick up from a regular antenna
