    Starting a website

I would like to start a website during the winter break. I guess who can consider me a newbie on this topic but I do know stuff about computers as I take Visual Basic for first period and hang around the computer nerds for a bit at school.

Anybody have any tips and tricks? Some pointers or things I need to know? Anyway I can get some money from the site or atleast get it to pay for itself?

Yes...I am willing to pay for the site.

    Thanks

I learned a fair amount of HTML using FrontPage. Most people don't like it but the newest version (2003) is much better than the older ones. It's pretty easy to use and it shows the code as you do stuff so you will learn if you pay attention to what it does.

the guy that runs that does a great job....but he's also a college professor, so maybe that has something to do with it....but it's THE best site to check out if you are new to the game or a seasoned veteran

I have had a couple websites. My best tip is to not start it unless you know you can be dedicated, and you will have to work semi-hard to spread the word yourself and look like a fool doing it too.

HEY GUYS CHECK OUT THIS SITE is what you will sound/look like even though it may not be the case. If you have a message board it helps attract people because they have better reason to keep coming back.

A message board is only good if you know you'll have returning members. If not it's just a waste of time right MSU?

MSU hit the spot with his advice though.

I would never consider that a waste of time, but it all depends on what type of site you put up. A few I have up are just "casual" where I just update whenever and if an update doesn't happen for a week, no biggie. Since you are new to the website thing, that is probably what type of site you would be starting up.

Also starting a website depends on a LOT of things. Obviously you want to know what the site will be about (gaming site with news and reviews? political site with news and opinions? etc.), a site name and then if you want to create your own from scratch, geocities is a good start. If you want to learn HTML however than htmlgoodies.com is good and also doing a simple "html tutorials" gogle search will help.

                    Good luck.
