    Next wave of entertainment?

It started with Vaudeville, went to radio,to the silver screen then to television. What do you think the next wave of entertainment will be? Can it be something PC and internet related? Do you think it can possibly go back to stage performing? Or do you think with the edition of HDTVs and expanded cable and Tivo devices, that we'll be stuck with televisions for a while?

For some odd reason, I can see video games being the next wave of entertainment. Imagine playing interactive tv shows where all your favorite actors can be controlled and manipulated to create your own virtual show with thousands of possibilities and having the ability to downloads diffrent sets, more dialog and diffrent actors. Ethier that or games just being the medium in which tv shows and movies are made.

Sounds strange? Thats because it does'nt exsist yet.

    Re: Next wave of entertainment?

I think the most logical will be interactive movies, basically a real cool video game that ends in two or 3 hours. It would be sweet to do an interactive horror flick with a group of your friends.

On a side note, as graphics become lifelike, are there going to be a need for actors and actresses? Imagine they could create a gorgeous rendered chick that looks totally lifelike and just have a troll behind the scenes doing the voiceovers. Or if you want Tom Hanks in a movie 20 years from now that looks like the Hanks of today, just render him and have him do the voiceovers from his rocking chair. Or just buy the rights to his synthesized speach.

I like the horror flick with you friends idea. I was thinking the same thing with lifelike graphics and how they may whipe out real life actors and actresses. From a financial and egotistical standpoint, rendered actors would be a brilliant idea. Hollywood would'nt have to deal with anymore snobbish actors and pay them arms and legs for them to star in films. In the future, it may be possible to pass fictional computer generated actors as the biggest stars in entertainment. It would save corporations tons of money.

As for the Tom Hanks 20 years from now thing, it sounds like a good idea now but just think, in 20 years, Tom Hanks will be a aincent memory. It'll be like having a rendered Frank Sinatra starring into todays films. It'll do good for those who remember him but most markets today go for young adults and teens anyway. Futrarama has this same concept with the heads in a pickle jar. I doubt ppl 50-100 years from now will care much for our generation of actors.

Yeah, you are probably right about the Tom Hanks. Afterall, what makes him a good actor is the way he absorbs the role he is in. Its not like he's a sex symbol, he's just got "it". But that "it" is more a generational thing. The next generation will have their own Tom Hanks.

However, I do think that Marilyn Monroe could transcend generations, she's just Hot, Hot yesterday, hot tomorrow. That's the kind of once in a 100 year person I was thinking about, rather than a Tom Hanks. But with computer technology, you could put Marylin in the latest fashion trends, etc. It would look much more fluid than the Sinatra that we've seen morphed into today's movies.

On a side note, you may not have to deal with snobbish actors and actresses down the road, but I can only imagine the computer geek that creates the next sex symbol and copyrights it. People are strrange, if they want to see that specific rendered actress or actor, they won't settle for anything else. I think we might run into the same large sums of money to get computer rendered Jennifer 6719 in a movie as we do today for Nicole Kidman, etc.

Well the idea of interactive video games is slowly being realized. Rent INDIGO PROPHECY and you'll see what i mean.

As for the next wave, it's going to be interactive for sure but I can also see holographic entertainment as well.

Immersion is the next wave, imo. In light of the sagging attendence figures at movie box offices during the last year or so, the studios are really hoping that 3D movies provide an incentive for people to come back to the theaters. That will, of course, only last until 3D DVDs come out, but for a little while it'll probably give movie theaters a boost in attendence figures.

Another development I could see happening would be a greater sense of environmental immersion when it comes to video games, especially MMORPGs. Right now it's very difficult to make a player feel part of a community and a "magical" environment while interacting against static, instanced environments and bland NPCs who say the same thing to everyone. But I could see actors being hired to work within these video games, as actual people who would function the way NPCs used to - handing out quests and giving out rewards, etc. So instead of the king of your fantasy world being some totally non-interactive NPC, he would be portrayed by a real person who would act as that character within that game as an actor might act within a movie, thereby lending a greater sense of immersion and reality to the game.

            Eh, just an idea....

I'm all for holgrams myself. In fact, there is a company somewhere working on holographic technology.

I said in a post a while ago, I think it was something to do with the future of sports telecast, there is another company working on 3D holographic tv.

Best 3D movie I ever saw, wait, it was actually 2 3d movies. Both of them were at Disney World. One was Honey I Shrunk the Audience and the other was Terminator 3D. They both were cool but I can tell that the cost to produce something like that on a regular basis would be staggering. Its pretty much the reason why 3D movies are'nt made very much. Last movie I can think of was Spy Kids. (And I wanna see it) For some strange reason, I hang onto every pair of 3D glasses I get just in case you need them.

As for the NPC idea, that would be sweet as well. You can hire actors to work 8 hour shifts being a character in a MMORPG or something of the sort. It'll be cool to piss him off and he wont give you any quest or something depending on his character.

I'm liking all the ideas fellas, keep em coming.

Hopefully the next big form of entertainment doesnt involve television or some new ipod player version 357XXX nuno mach 2, anything of the like. Id like to see more people getting out and playing sports, or becoming more involved in their communities. Instead of getting home from work, sitting down and watching television for 6 hours, id like to see more people come home, suit up, and play some rec basketball, football, softball, hockey, soccer...whatever. At least once or twice a week. I wanna see technology become less relevant in society.....its nice to wish eh???

I saw both of those 3D movies. There's also a really good Muppets 3D movie at, I think, Universal Studios. Did you ever see Captain Eo, the Michael Jackson 3D movie at Disneyworld? That was probably the first 3D movie I ever saw and I remember it pretty much blowing my doors off when I was a kid. But like you said, the production values on those movies have got to be pretty staggering. I didn't mention this earlier, but I really loved the environmental immersion techniques that they used in those movies, like when the dog sneezed on the audience in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids movie and they sprayed the audience with water. Pretty cool stuff. That's something they couldn't replicate for a home theater audience....

Did'nt catch the first 2 you mentioned but my expirence with the last 2 were quite memorable and I was about 13 when I saw them. I remeber that part in Honey I Shrunk the Audience with the dog sneezing on the crowd and also remember a part when a bunch of rats were let loose and something under our seats made it feel like the rats were running past by tickling our ankles. You dont get production like that anywhere else. The Terminator was cool as well. I still remember those exoskeletons running around the sides of the auditorium bustin guns all around us.

how about movies that incorporate sound, feel, and smell.

Like they have heaters, misters, smell machines to really imerse you into the environment.

I remember this live Terminator show at Universial that incorporated smell and feel
