Re: Rolling Stone Top 50 Albums of 2005
Originally posted by BGarrett7It's funny, actually. Rolling Stone will get so far up an artist/band's rectum, put them on numerous covers throughout the year, praise their every step and movement... And then give their album three stars -- like they did with X&Y. I think it would be absolutely hilarious, and quite fitting given Rolling Stone's style, if the Coldplay album had made the top fifty albums of the year.
I own 9 of the albums on the list. The list isn't that bad, other than Rolling Stones being #2, no one else has them anywhere in the top 10, or 20 or 30 for that matter. Just a case of RS being all over an older band, they do that quite often. There really aren't any surprising picks at all, a nice, safe list that keeps some indie cred while being mainly focused on mainstream stuff. A by-the-book list, but for Rolling Stone is really isn't that bad. Like you said, Coldplay isn't on the list, neither is RS darlings the Dave Matthews Band. They also put on some bands who probably got the 100 word review treatment when their album came out.Comment

I've seen Paul McCartney's album on more than a few lists. Has anybody listened to it and have any impressions?

Originally posted by CM1847The covers and pub are all about $$$$$. Coldplay was coming over here in their first major, big-venue tour of the states and needed an extra push in pub in magazines and radio play. They got it and sold out shows all over the country. The same band who couldn't sell out a small community college gym 3 years ago over here, now selling out anywhere they played.Comment

The list first lost me with kanye being number one and died when 50 cent was at 10.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Originally posted by BGarrett7I can't speak for the rest of the country, but Coldplay has been selling out arenas in Atlanta since early 2003. Their popularity wasn't exactly sudden or a result of Rolling Stone or other magazine covers.
Their popularity definitely isn't a direct result of magazine covers, but they definetely made sure they put the money into getting publicity so EVERYBODY knew they had a new album and tour.
My original point was that money can buy you covers of magazines, but I am glad to see that RS didn't make sure to suck up to them on this album, which they obviously thought wasn't that great. They could have easily thrown a 4 star review at X&Y and put it in their top 10, I was just glad to see they didn't do that.Comment
