    Powerbook. RAM.

i am going to buy a 12inch powerbook tomorrow.

i am getting a 100 dollar student discount.

should i spend 180 and upgrade the ram from 512mb to 1.25gb?

    is it worth it?

    i have a 12 inch powerbook with 740mb ram...
i of course depends on what you want to do with your powerbook,
personally i would get the upgrade because i do alot of things at ones with my pb -> i need a fast system..

oh and i dont want to mess up your decision but you do know that new ibooks featuring the new intel processors will most likely be out in january, right?

Since RAM is the only thing you can upgrade in a laptop computer, I always recommend "maxing out" the ram. This way, the computer is as fast as it can possibly ever be, and you never have to worry about "tossing out" RAM chips like you do if you upgrade incrementally. Since the 12in powerbook only has one free slot, if you stay with the 512 standard, you have 256 built into the motherboard, and a 256 chip. When you decide to max out later(you will), you then have to pay full price for the 1 GB chip, and then you have a useless 256 chip that you had to take out. YOu actually SAVE by having them put in the 1GB chip at first, since you don't have to pay for the 256 chip, and just put that money toward the 1GB chip.

Another reason to do it? You're getting a GREAT deal! Regular customers going through the apple store have to pay $250 for the upgrade. My educational discount is showing at $225. Even retailer crucial.com, which is renowned for having much lower RAM prices since you're buying direct(and using the exact same RAM apple does), shows the 1GB chip at $205.99(edit:on sale at $185.39). All of which are higher than the $180 you're quoting!

        DO IT.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Oversimplification is the escape of men who want to avoid the duty demanded by true understanding.
