Anybody use VOIP service (vonage, etc.)?

I'm thinking about ditching my home phone line and going with VOIP using Vonage or Voicepulse. I'm sick of paying over $100/month to Bellsouth for just DSL/phone service. Anybody using it?

My father and I own our own company that offers a business class VoIP for small businesses.

VOLP?? That's a new one to me.

I have Vonage. It's Ok. It only saves me about $10-$15 per month so it's not a big deal for me.

One of my friends also has Vonage and it works out well since he makes a ton of long distance calls and Vonage is cheaper for him.

you won't be able to use Bellsouth DSL without phone service. You will have to switch to a cable modem.

Well of course...I thought it was implied.

I use vonage and think it is a good deal for those who make a lot of long distance calls. One thing you need to be aware of, is that if your internet connection is down, so is your phone.

When I first got Vonage a few years ago, two days later we had that major blackout on the East coast. I tried for hours to get in touch with my wife to tell her I was OK.

As with anything else, it has its pluses and minuses.

Ok, here's a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway. I have phones in almost every room of my house, will I need a CAT 5 connection there, or wireless connection at every phone? I'm assuming it doesn't use the phone jacks anymore.

                  It uses phone jacks somehow.

I use voicepulse. 14.99 a month with 200 long distance minutes (I don't use the long distance at all really) The way it works is there is a little box that runs into your router with two jacks on it, one jack for each line. What I did was buy one of those phone sets where you only have to have one plugged in with extra handsets. I've had zero problems with mine and I've had it for about a year.

Re: Anybody use VOIP service (vonage, etc.)?

I've had it for almost 2 years...ask as many questions as you want since I've used it a lot. Here are some features answers to above questions:

                      - You plug your internet connection into the phone router. Then you can plug that into the wall jack and can plug any phone into the house into a phone jack and it will work. Personally, I have a Uniden wireless system that only needs one phone to be plugged into the phone jack and the rest just need power. I think that's the best situation.

                      - Vonage is awesome (usually). More than likely you will experience a little bit of break-up (like a cell phone) or dropped calls. But unless you're on the phone a lot it won't affect you.

                      - The features are amazing. I get all my voicemails e-mailed to me. Then I can listen to them at work on my computer or any computer in the world that has a soundcard & speakers. I can also save them in my control panel and listen to them from there.

                      - If you're on a call at home and you need to go somewhere you can press a short series of buttons and transfer the call to your cell phone. I've used this more than once and it's very convenient.

                      - Caller ID online. So, you can login and see the last month of inbound and outbound calls. For inbound, you can also see the name (i.e. 555-5555 - John Smith) or business name.

                      - Free call-forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, 3-way calling.

I have two accounts...one for my home based business ($15 a month) and one for our home phone line ($15 a month). Personally I really like it and think traditional phone lines will be extinct in less than 10 years.

P.S. If anyone might sign-up and they want a free month and want to give me a free month too please PM me with your e-mail so I can send you a referral link...I'd appreciate it! Also, any other questions feel free to post here or PM me. Thanks!
