I just experimented with this, using iTunes for both rips.
The Ataris' "In This Diary" from a tour sampler was my dummy file...
AAC at 128 kbps is like sound quality to an MP3 at 192 kbps.
AAC, 128 kbps: 3.6 MB
MP3, 192 kbps: 5.4 MB
MP3, 128 kbps: 3.6 MB
So, if you encode both at 128 kbps, you are going to get a very like-sized file, but probably going to suffer noticeable quality loss if you go with MP3.
As for your protected question, only iTMS files are in M4P format. Normal AAC-encoded files are M4A. -
