I'd go with the nano simply because you actually know what you're listening to and have a choice instead of songs just randomly coming up.

The Ipod shuffle is useless. Why anyone would buy a shuffle is beyond me. If you need a workout Mp3, there are better options than the shuffle.

nano holds more, is smaller, has a nice arm band you can get...no contest IMO.

Price is your only factor I think, so if you can afford both, get the nano, having a screen is nice when you want to play a specific song and not just shuffle through hoping to hear it.

If he's using it to work out then he doesn't really need more songs or the ability to see what he's listening to does he? I mean its not like he's gonna be able to drop all the weight he's holding and change the song when he decides he wants to listen to something else.

I'd go with the shuffle, really small, lightweight, and perfect for workout sessions.

you can get a mp3 player the price of the shuffle that allows you to pick songs and the like, you don't need to buy an apple

If you're working out... I think it's kind of pointless to have a display when you're running on the treadmill or whatever because you never look at it. This is purely assumption, but I think you'd most likely just keep the player in your pocket and press the next song if you want to skip.

Either 1) get a shuffle, or 2) get a better 'display' type MP3 player that's cheaper than the nano. Honestly, you deserve better than iPods... there are much better options out there, iRiver for one.
