Others claim they are just trying to show Microsoft how bad their software is (in terms of security).Comment

I just thought of another reason and it's one that makes me upset. See some hackers become so notorious/famous that anti-virus software companies often hire these guys to big money contracts.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Beware: New Virus...
Until Microsoft gets this patched up, you can do a few things to reduce the risk of infection:
1. Install and run NOD32 trial version. It's free and one of the few AV programs that can detect this new virus.
2. Stop using Internet Explorer. Use Firefox, Opera, Mozilla or some other alternate browser.
3. Turn off sigs/avatars on forums your browse. People are reportedly using infected images in sigs and avatars in order to spread the virus rapidly.
4. Uninstall Google Desktop if you have it on your system.
Quote:
Google Desktop users have to be particularly careful as the search giant's software indexes any downloaded image file, an action that will cause the exploit to immediately execute, according to security researchers. A Microsoft spokesperson said the company is currently investigating the reports.
5. Tell other people about this to mitigate the spreading of the virus.
Do this also, until MS can figure something out.

Some hackers are "reformed" and hired by Microsoft to find security holes in their software. Then MS fixes the holes before release. Kind of like taking pre-emptive action. Of course, they'll never find everything...Comment
