Re: Matt Kearney
Being a huge Aware fan, I've been hearing about Mat Kearney for a while now, but for some reason or another have never even taken the opportunity to listen to him yet. He's supposed to be on Aware 11 compilation, as well as appearing on The Rock Boat coming up later this month. I really do want to say that I've seen this guy live before, but I'll be damned if I can think of where or when that would be the case. Either way, I just listened to his soundclips from Bullet on Amazon and am really digging the guy. This is certainly going to take some further listening on my part.
EDIT: After consulting with the significant other, apparently we have seen him live. Honestly though, I can't for the life of me remember who he was opening for and when.Last edited by BGarrett7; 01-02-2006, 07:10 PM.Comment

Re: Matt Kearney
No, DONT CHECK JOHN RUEBEN!!!!
Well I wont say don't, but I dont suggest him.
I saw him live once and man he sucked. Although a couple of his songs are nice. Granted I dont really like rap, but I think he's iffy.
The songs to check out for him though are his newer ones, especially off 'The Boy vs The Cynic'.Comment

Re: Matt Kearney
So, I downloaded Bullet and just got done listening to it.
I was quite impressed. Some definite standout tracks to be had, with "Bullet," "In The Middle," and "Walking Away" being the most prominent. I think after a few more listens, I could really get into what Kearney has to offer. Makes me even more pissed off that I'm not going on The Rock Boat this year, as his name makes the already stacked lineup even more impressive now. Hopefully he'll be a part of TRB07 and I'll get a chance to see him do his thing.Comment

Re: Matt Kearney
Hate to top a two month old thread, but if you can get your hands on a copy of Mat's Chicago EP, you definitely won't be disappointed. It has the album versions of "Nothing Left To Lose" and "Undeniable" -- the version from Bullet, not the new album -- as well as absolutely brilliant acoustic takes on "Chicago," "Girl America" and "In The Middle." You totally haven't experienced Kearney's excellence until you've at least heard the last two tracks stripped down.Comment

Re: Matt Kearney
So, Nothing Left to Lose came out last Tuesday, anyone else pick it up? It's a very solid release, and I like it even more so than Bullet. It shares six songs with the previous release (Undeniable, Girl America, Bullet, In The Middle, Renaissance, Won't Back Down) and adds in seven new songs (Nothing Left To Lose, Crashing Down, Can't Break Her Fall, What's A Boy To Do, Wait, All I Need, Where We Gonna Go From Here) which are quite solid. I hate to see that "Trainwreck" didn't make the cut for NLtL, but the new material more than makes up for it's absence. If you've heard the acoustic tracks that were on the Chicago EP that was released a couple months ago in prep for NLtL, then you have a good idea about what the new songs feel like. The beats are still somewhat there -- especially on the Bullet tracks, which do not appear to have been re-recorded -- but for the most part, the seven new songs are a lot more stripped down and intimate. Personally, I think it fits his voice and style a lot more so than how he came off on a couple of the tracks on Bullet, but he is still very much capable of pulling those off as well. Kearney is just an incredible musician, and after having listened to Nothing Left to Lose at least five or six times all the way through in the past week, I can definitely go ahead and reserve a spot for it in my year-end list of the best albums released in '06.Comment
