The favorite game for my wife and I when we have people over is "Settlers of Catan". You set that baby up on a large scale (4-6 players) and it's very competetive. It's easy to learn, and has the perfect balance of luck and skill/strategy. Anyone who hasn't tried the game should. We also have the expansion packs which add a whole other dimension to the game.
We also play "Risk", which fun when you have multiple people. Once you pare the board down to about three sides (so make sure you have another game for the losers to play), anything can happen. The better war game is "Axis and Allies", but we've only played that game one on one, since it takes a long time to set up and there the rules are very complex.I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be. - Douglas Adams

We've got the 90s version, and it's pretty fun. We've only played it a couple times with some friends and had a good time. Not really, I know there is a group of ppl who are good at those little trivial details but I could'nt even come close to answering 99% of the questions those games have. When we bought it we were thinking somewhere in the range of "which pop group won the Grammy for best group in 94" or something of that nature. That question about the figure skater was memorable because it was at that point when we gave the game up.
BTW, I made up the "freestyle" part. The question was real but I could'nt remember the actual name of the event.
