    Re: I Just Watched

Okay... well then I'll rephrase it a second time, saying that, just like you said, the admiration aspect will not allude to [and should not ever be a factor to] leading somebody to like one movie over the other (in this case, an original over its remake).

But come on... even as old as it is, you can't laugh at this?

Edit: Note that I'm not talking about King Kong's look. I can put up other pictures to laugh at that. It's the fact that he's all of the sudden 1000x bigger than the city, as is Ann.

      Re: I Just Watched

I just woke up and I promised myself not to post til later in the morning but blzer has once again made HUGE generalizations about movies "back in the day". The movies in the '30s and '40s used a clipped acting style that at times can seem overly theatrical or very emotionless. This is understandable but even back then there were some actors who broke out of the mold. (Humphrey Bogart comes to mind)

In the '50s to the early '70s the rise of Method acting gave actors a far better range and emotional lift. One should watch the early movies of Marlon Brando to get a better idea of this.

Since then we've seen the "method" used to a large degree and also acting that combines the Method with traditional acting techniques over the last 30 years.

Just because you may find some performances stilted (30s and 40s) or overly emotional (50s to early 70s) doesn't mean they're bad. I actually think there was a lot more distinctive actors back in the day. They all had very different personalities whereas most actors today are pretty bland and are easily interchangable.

I didn't mean all 30s movies... I was only comparing versions of King Kong.

Of course, it all boils down to opinion, but you can't deny the fact that acting was very different then. You talk about the clipped acting style that I was referring to; I'm not sure if possibly projective and expressionate voicing was required because of the audio technology (or lack thereof) they had, or what. All I know is that, well, to me it's unflavorable.

I don't doubt for one second that there were certain actors of that time period that were 'revolutional' in my book, but I was just making the case about King Kong.

Ah ok well then you have a point. King Kong wasn't the greatest acted out film. It's still quite enjoyable to me tho.

BTW if I came on too strong, my apologies.

Ahah! I just got back from seeing King Kong (again) and it becomes so much better after watching the original. The references to the original are fantastic (ie: the "scene" on the boat). I can't wait for the DVD, "Kong Size' Edition, heh.

Just finished watching Apocalypse Now. Overall, it was a psychological trip that had me going insane. Great movie. Francis Ford really displayed the insane, mad, horrors of Heart of Darkness (which is a fantastic story) and made the movie even more enjoyable for myself.

Now I'm curious. Is the redux version worth checking out or does it ruin the movie?

I like the Redux version, but I'm not sure if more than the original. There's a lot of added scenes, and the only thing I really didn't like was some changes that were made. The movie might seem to drag awhile, but this is Coppola here and he likes his epics.

I watched Two for the Money last night. It was better than I thought it would be. I liked a story from the perspective of the bet handicappers rather than the gamblers themselves.

The scenes added to the redux doesn't really change anything.

Except they add opium smoking and some more chest shots.

Anyways, I just finished up Blazing Saddles. Possibly Mel Brooks' best movie.

The Producers = Mel Brooks' best

Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder are perhaps the best comedy pairing in cinema history. You all MUST check it out.

I was howlin' last weekend watching The Producers. Hilarious movie. Gene Wilder was perfect. Great casting all around. Great, great movie.

I watched Citizen Kane last night. I don't even have to say how great it was. Anyway, being a White Stripes fan and knowing about The Union Forever (lyrics), I thought it was pretty damn cool.

I watched Junebug earlier today. I mainly watched it because of the The OC star (Ben McKenzie) and a Smallville guest star (Amy Adams). It was okay, funny in some parts, sad in some parts. It kinda ended without any kind of climax though. The final line of the movie was hilarious though, it's what I think every time I am finally leaving from visiting my parent's house. :y4:
