    Requiem for a Dream

Just finished watching this film for the first time, and all i can say is.....WOW. Such a sad and depressing movie. Ellen Burstyn who plays Sara Goldfarb was absolutely amazing. If you guys haven't seen this film you need to. Very powerful.

i have to see the movie but the book was so hard for me to read. i've known people just like em...and i had to stop reading it a couple times because it was jus getting too painful to read. i know for sure if you have a weak stomach it wouldn't be for you because just reading it for me got me queezy with all the drug details

Not that you are necessarily being contrary to this point, but I will use your comment as a springboard.

What I find makes this film so powerful and unique is that, unlike other "drug" movies, the focus is NOT the drugs themselves and what "drugs can do to you". In my mind, the focus is ADDICTION, and how destructive it is in all of its forms(television, coffee, etc.). The film equates Sara's addiction with television to heroin addiction, calling into question what exactly a "drug" is by saying ANYTHING can be a drug if you are addicted to it. Sports can be a drug, the internet can be a drug, etc.

MUCH more interesting and thought provoking than films that focus on the DRUG as the evil(i.e. Traffic, which came out around the same time, and I like, for different reasons). Just stating my opinion about the film itself, we cannot discuss the larger issues at work here at this forum.
