They mentioned it on the last Ebert-Roeper. It will also be in high definition on HDNet Friday.

It would maximize profit if the film is available on DVD when it has finished its run in theatres, but not before. I do think the film to DVD cycle needs to be shortened, but releasing the the film and DVD at the same time would be suicide.

I would think movie studios would make more money if there was a gap between when the movie is in theatres and when the DVD comes out.

I disagree, we all know piracy is rampant (even I admit to buying a couple pirated DVDs i'm sure everyone on this site has at one time or another) so any advantage the studios can get will be taken.

BTW I didn't know this til I saw a tv report on this story but the Studios often waste money by having huge publicity junkets when the movie comes out theatrically and again on a somewhat lesser scale when it's launched on DVD.

So there's another reason to just release everything at the same time. You would have more focused press junkets and spend half the money.

Not if the DVD release was splattered based on the areas where the film was ceasing its run in theatres. The film would still be fresh on people's minds, which would lead to greater sales in that first week after the theatrical run. I do agree with you, though, that the gap does maximize sales much more than a simultaneous release.

So, you save advertising dollars, but you lose equal parts of the theatrical gross and the DVD gross. Most people are not going to buy the DVD and then go to the theatre to see the film. The current system maximizes profit in both venues. People will go see the film in theatres and then buy the DVD months later. The advertising dollars are huge for both releases, but combining releases date would lose more money than it saves.

I still think half of it boils down to the fact that 90% of the movies released today are pure crap. Either awful remakes or recycled plots that we've seen a hundred times already. There is very little originality left in movies. Very few movies.

Even most of the movies I get from Blockbuster Online are older ones.

I like the Idea but the dvd should not come out immediatly maybe right after the movie has made its intial run in theaters like when it goes to the dollar theater that is when it should goto dvd so maybe a 2 month turn around. Just my opinion

Even if the theater's charged only three dollars, I STILL wouldn't go if I could BUY the movie on that same day for the usual 14.99 price that Best Buy typically charges for first-day releases.

Maybe once in a rare while, but in most cases, if choosing between the two, I'd rather have something that I could own and watch again...
