You can close the thread now. Nothing left to see....except to go out and get yourself some Billy Cobham music.
I will say this....Buddy Rich is a close second.

I've honestly never heard of him. He is awesome though. Number 1 on my list right now.

Not going to throw my own two cents in here as I don't feel informed enough to judge. However, a few weeks ago I was priveledged enough to be able to hang out w/ my favorite band before they performed. Well they were talking music with one of the other bands on the tour and the one drummer essentially said that Lars Ulrich was crap and then they got into this discussion of a few YouTube videos they had seen where he couldn't play his own songs right.

          My short list:

Stewart Copeland: Just saw The Police live 5 days ago, I knew he was bad *** but damn... I had never witnessed someone playing two kits (rock kit and a percussion set-up) in in the same song, actually having to get up and switch between them on the fly more than once, simply amazing.

Pert: Not a fan of Rush at all, but he is freaking one of the best, period.

          Bonham: Zeppelin nuff said.

Moon: Keith freaking Moon awesome, awesome talent...

I wouldn't be able to choose between these guys, they all are immensely talented.

                Peart probably.

My favorite "new age" drummer is probably Jason Bittner.

Re: The Greatest Drummer of All Time

Bittner is solid, but he reminds me of a lot of standard metal drummers. Just regular beats with fast fills and double bass. Guys like Christy and Haake have jazz chops, as well as metal/rock chops. For outright speed, I gotta give it up to Flo. Haake might be the most creative blend of progressive drumming and brutality, but my personal favorite is probably Christy. He's the only drummer I can think of that can make me purchase an album just for his work on it. Penne from Dillinger/Coheed is ridiculous too.

Hard to so who's the greatest since there's so many different styles. It depends on what you're looking for. I like Jojo Mayer for is style and fluidity, everytime I watch any of his videos, I'm wowed.

                      I'd vote for Neil Peart.

I'm glad no one has mentioned Tommy Lee.

my new favorite drummer is john fred young of Black Stone Cherry.
Amazing energy, and the guy can just flat out play. Never knew he was that great until I saw one of their shows sober.
The 5 minute solo (half of it with no drum sticks was amazing)
He's gonna be one of the better ones for this generation
