Re: Cheap IPOD VS More Expensive IPOD
Listen to one and find out. I don't think one can determine how good an iPod is using those crappy earbuds they give you. I've never listened to a Nano, but I've heard nothing but good things about until now.
You could try to find an iPod Mini, the model the Nano replaced. They are not as small, physically, but their sound quality is the same as a standard iPod and you can probably get one for about 180 (unless their prices have gone up because they're more scarce).Comment

Re: Cheap IPOD VS More Expensive IPOD
I have a Nano. My roommate bought a regular 20gb model at the same time. I have listened to both, and don't notice any difference in sound quality. Not saying it isn't there, but I sure couldn't tell.Comment

Re: Cheap IPOD VS More Expensive IPOD
Well keep in mind I don't walk around asking people about their iPods. I have a few friends who have a Nano, and they enjoy them. That and an initial (positive) review of the product when it came out is all I've heard about it.Comment

While the sound quality of the "regular" iPod isn't as good as that of an iRiver or Creative unit, that difference is exaggerated. But I listened to a Nano over Christmas break, and the difference in sound quality between that and a "regular" iPod and other company's hard-drive based units was easily audible.
The Nano has very tinny treble and very little bass with the stock iPod earbuds. And yes, I have listened to "regular" iPods with the earbuds for equal comparison.
Nanos are amazing little units for their tiny size and excellent ergonomics. But if sound quality is king or high up your priority ladder, the Nano isn't going to deliver as well as a "regular" iPod or rival products from some manufacturers.

I just went with one of the regular minis. Can get a good price off ebay and it holds about 1000 songs, which is plenty for me.Comment

Re: Cheap IPOD VS More Expensive IPOD
My wife owns an Ipod Mini, and she brought home a friends new Nano to load some songs onto it. Imo I thought the Nano had outstanding sound compared to the Mini. Bass was much deeper and the music in general seems to be more "alive". I was using the Shure E3G ear monitors while listening to both. Listening to and holding the Nano that evening definately sold me on buying one. It is a work of art, and it sounds great.
A few days later, my wife bought me a 60GB Ipod Video. The Ipod video is just an enlarged version of the Nano. I believe both are considered Generation 5 Ipods and both have sound improvements over the old Ipod mini.Last edited by andayaman; 01-27-2006, 10:24 PM.Comment
