Warner Home Video unveils a Superman 14-Disc Collection

dvd, dvds, blu, bluray, blu-ray, blu ray, blu ray disc, bluray disc, blu-ray disc, video, films, movies, reviews, news, information, releases, dvd reviews, blu ray reviews

During a press event earlier today, Warner Home Video made a fairly sensational announcement that is sure to please fans of the “Superman” films. The studio has a 14-disc DVD set in the making of "Superman." The set, called Superman: Ultimate Collector’s Edition is filled with featurettes, documentaries, and other stuff surrounding the Superman feature films, as well as all these films themselves.

However, best of all, the set will also contain the Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2!

As fans will undoubtedly know, Richard Donner was relieved as a director from the film and replaced by Richard Lester before he could complete the film. Still, 70% of the movie were finished at the time but never released, of course ,though part of his footage was actually used in Lester’s “Superman2 “ version. But not nearly all of it. There is about 45 minutes of footage that has never been seen before – especially not the way Richard Donner had envisioned it!

Now, the studio is working with Donner to create the cut of the movie that he had in mind originally, which is VERY cool, of course, painstakingly restored. During the press event we were treated to a five-minute clip from the film - the opening sequence which had never before been seen - and it was a blast!

Get ready for this one, because it’s going to be huge!

I think this will be out this summer. I think I'll just rent the Superman movies on DVD since I have an itch to see them and wait to buy this set.

yeah I read that earlier tonight, I was amazed. I can't wait to find out what is on 10 discs of special features! I've seen the "lost" Donner cuts before, it will be totally different built into the actual movie. Can't wait.

            Supergirl

            2 Disc Set

digital bits reports the following after the Warner's Press event last night:

Late in 2006 (tentatively in November, timed to coincide with the DVD release of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns), look for a 14-disc Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition box set. This will feature new deluxe editions of all four of the original feature films, including a Superman II: Special Edition with something called The Donner Cut. This is being assembled by editor Michael Thaw based on the film's original shooting script and Donnor's original notes. At least 50% of the film will be footage you've never seen, more than 70% of it directed by Donner. You'll also get Richard Lester's final theatrical cut of the film. The Donner Cut will only be available on DVD in the Ultimate Collector's Edition box set, although it will also be released in HD-DVD (and likely Blu-ray Disc if that format is available).

We were actually shown a clip of the new Donner Cut at the event - the original opening to Superman II, in which Lois Lane notices a picture of Superman in a copy of The Daily Planet... and then she looks at Clark Kent standing nearby... and she begins drawing glasses, a suit and hat on the picture of Superman. She figures it out. Then she tells Clark she knows who she really is... and jumps out Perry White's office window to prove she's right. Clark runs at super-speed downstairs, and blows up at the falling Lois to slow her fall. She lands safely in a fruit stand, by which time Clark has already run back upstairs to preserve his identity. Someone asks him where Lois is, and he replies, "Uh... she just stepped out for a minute."

An interesting thing to note however, is that it seems Richard Donner himself hasn't yet been involved (and is not involved in cutting the new version of the film). During the event, I chatted with AICN's Drew McWeeny (well known as "Moriarty" over there) who told me that he's been interviewing Donner recently (watch for that to be posted on AICN soon). The director has reportedly told Drew that he's not really interested in revisiting the film. When asked during the event what Donner's involvement was (whether or not he'd do commentary, etc), Warner execs said, "That's still to be decided." Our guess is that the studio is still negotiating with Donner to participate, and that it's merely a matter of a dollar figure that everyone is happy with. Cross your fingers on this, because it'd be a real shame if he declined to be involved. FYI, IGN also has a brief interview with Donner that touches on this.

Couldn't they just leave out Superman 3 and 4? Especially 4. Ugh.

What's up with 14 disc sets, this is the 2nd one announced in a week (Planet of the Apes was the first). Is there really a need for all that info for those movies?

                2 Disc Set
That's pretty cool. I could do without a 2 disc set for Supergirl, that wasn't that great of a movie. I also would rather them but the director's cut on the same disc as the theatrical version to save money. But if it improves the video quality, that'll be great. There should be plenty of room on those movie DVDs that they don't need to skip out on some nice audio, maybe a DTS track on all of them.

                Thanks

Yeah, but it has Helen Slater in tights.

I have the Limited Edition of the movie (There are 5000 copies. I have number 1900 or something like that). It was cheesy, but certainly better than Superman IV. I actually enjoyed III. I liked when Superman, with a 5:00 shadow, was in the bar flicking peanuts through the glass.

yeah I love the drunk Superman scenes. When he creates the oil spill and then waves at the captain... I have no problems with Superman III. The bad guys were stupid in that movie but I liked the whole bad Superman story, Smallville story, and Gus was hilarious.

Helen Slater in tights was a cool and a reason to watch Supergirl I suppose.

If the people marketing this set had any sense at all, they'd include one of those little audio players in the packaging so that each time you opened it you'd hear Terence Stamp's voice say, "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD."

Btw, am I the only person who actually likes Superman IV? I mean, it has a guy called "Nuclear Man" who ends up pounding Superman into the moon like a tent peg. That's pretty awesome in my book.

I have a feeling this'll hover around the 100 dollar figure. I better start saving my pennies because the Donner Cut of S2 is NOT being released on its own.
