    The Grateful Dead

Just a quick question for all the Dead fans here. I borrowed Workingman's Dead from a friend of work. Great album by the way. Anyway, the beginning of Casey Jones when he "sniffs." Is he doing what I think he's doing? Also, which album would be good to get after Workingman's Dead?

Lol, I don't listen to much Greatful Dead, but I am pretty sure that he is doing what you think he is doing on the beginning of that track. I've heard that song a lot, I don't remember that part though, I have only heard their greatest hits album though, maybe they cut it for that?

Yeah, I've heard Casey Jones played a lot as well, but I don't remember hearing that sniff at the beginning of the track. I guess they cut it for the single.

Heh heh. Yes, he's doing what you think he's doing. If you're looking for more studio Dead (which was never really what they were all about), you should pick up American Beauty. From the opening chord of Box of Rain to the last strains of Truckin', that CD is fan-freaking-tastic and features several classic songs.

However, if you're looking for LIVE Dead, the place to start is the 2-disc set, Europe '72. That tour through Europe in the early 70s was arguably the tightest and hottest that the bend ever sounded and those two discs are a very good introduction to their live sound.

Man....reading your post makes me wish I could go back and discover the Dead anew. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life!

LOL. I doubt I'll be sporting a teddy bear tattoo or black arm band any time soon.

LOL, I think you're safe. I'm pretty sure the fabled "coathanger teddy bear tattoo" rite of passage only happens after like 30 shows or so.
