 Haha, wow.

That was a hell of a speech too. I was getting scared and I'm not even sitting there in class, let alone I obviously didn't steal the computer.Comment

Re: Remind me to never steal a prof's laptop.

Good speech, but it sounds like he is bluffing. If he had two witnesses and a partial photograph of the person, why are they waiting for him to come forward. Seems like the Police would be sent to arrest the person or at least question him. If I had documents worth that much money, I don't think I would wait for people to return it.Comment

Just what I was thinking. It's not too hard to scare the heck out of a bunch of 18-20 year olds. I'll bet that the person that stole it didn't even know about all the crap that was on that CPU.Comment

Maybe he had something like this?Originally posted by fishepaThat guy is full of crap. Laptops don't have "transponders" to where you can tell wherever they are when the wireless card is on. What a dufus.

Yeah, it's not a simple "transponder", but it provides similar functionality, so perhaps he was simply simplifying the idea for the purposes of his "warning".I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Oversimplification is the escape of men who want to avoid the duty demanded by true understanding.Comment

Maybe he did. But I guess they don't work since they didn't catch the person who stole it.Originally posted by SilverstringMaybe he had something like this?

We have something like that on our laptops and it works very well. We recovered two laptops that were stolen by an employee. The only downfall is if the person never connects to the internet.Comment

What happens if the user re-installs the OS?Originally posted by camulosWe have something like that on our laptops and it works very well. We recovered two laptops that were stolen by an employee. The only downfall is if the person never connects to the internet.Comment

Re: Remind me to never steal a prof's laptop.

Doesn't matter. I believe how it works is it blocks of a partition and makes that untouchable to anything else. I'm not positive on the exact technology but they said it could be reimaged, swapped network cards, etc. I think the only real way around it is to swap out the HD. The company we got it through also guarantees recovery or they give you $1000.Originally posted by fishepaWhat happens if the user re-installs the OS?Comment
