    Ipod problem

Yesterday, I got a used 20 gig 4th generation ipod. I spent 3 hours last night trying to install it. I installed Itunes no problem. I plugged the ipod in (I'm using usb with windows xp) and it showed up, but i needed to install the ipod software and update it. So I did that, and now it doesn't work. When I plug it in, it shows that I've connected a device. Sometimes when I go to my computer it shows up, sometimes it doesn't. Itunes doesn't recognize any ipod. So I gave up last night.

Than today, I wake up, turn the computer on, plug the ipod in and it seems to be working fine. Itunes automatically loads up, and it starts transferring all my music. After around 10 minutes though my computer freezes and I have to restart it. Since then, I'm having the same problems. I've tried resetting the ipod, I've tried uninstalling itunes and the ipod software, hasn't worked.

Also, in some points of the day, when I try and turn the ipod on when it's not connected to the computer, it works fine. Other times, the apple logo comes up, then a folder with the apple sites url underneath, and then it just turns off.

    Help.

you could always try using winamp and the ipod plugin to put your music files on your ipod.

Did you try "RESTORE" on the 1-10 iPod UPdater? That will wipe it clean. I'd start from there.

I was able to do that earlier today, it either didn't help, or I did something else to mess it up after. I've been trying everything.

Now I can't even do it. When I open the updater, it either tells me to plug in an ipod even though it's already plugged in, or says that the ipod is being used by another application and to close it, even though I'm pretty sure it's not.

Now restoring seems to be working, but the meter has been sitting on the same spot for at least 20 minutes. It's almost at the end. How long is it supposed to take?

Ok, I restored it and it did.....something. In "my computer" it now shows a "removable disk" in E drive. And now the ipod has a check mark on it and says I can disconnect it. It had been saying not to disconnect it.

Any ideas what to do now?

Edit: And for some reason, my computer still shows the removable disk in E drive, and has the little green arrow in the toolbar saying to safely remove hardware, even after I disconnected the ipod.

            Not sure what this means.

When you remove the iPod from the USB Plug, make sure you use iTunes Eject. Annoying, but you have to do it.

                  Eject your iPod.
                  Restart your computer
                  Open iTunes
                  Plug in your iPod
                  Name your iPod

                  That should work.

                    Re: Ipod problem

Well, today I woke up and it recognized it again. Said there was an Ipod in the E drive, and Itunes opened. It started transferring my songs. After it got to around 100 (out of 680) it stopped, and said ok to disconnect. I didn't know why it didn't do all the songs, but i figured ok, at least it did some. I disconnected it, and while it showed i had the songs on my ipod in itunes, when I actually disconnected it my ipod didn't have any songs on it.

I didn't use the eject thing in itunes, could that have done it?

If you don't use Eject the probability of f-ing up your iPod is much higher.

Now I can get the comptuer to recognize it almost every time. But it never gets through all the songs without freezing, and the songs never actually get on the ipod.
