    The 40 Year Old Virgin

Maybe there is something wrong with me, but did ANYONE else absolutely hate this movie? I picked it up with a free rental at Hollywood Video and at about the hour mark was bored out of my mind. The fact that I sat through it for the final hour plus was in hindsight an absolutely terrible decision. What I'm trying to get is how the movie was so well reviewed (even made Roeper's top ten of 2005).

A little background. I'm in my mid-twenties, happily married with a toddler. Maybe that has warped my world view. The thing is, I don't even think I would have liked the movie back in high school. I saw it simply as one long joke without a punchline. The movie was predictable, ran very long in points (the waxing scene was painful...not because of the hair removal but of how many "Ohh man" lines were echoed by his friends and the stream of expletives from Carell).

I even like Steve Carell, he's great on "The Office", which is one of my favorite shows. I left this movie feeling like a few points of my IQ were lost, never to be reclaimed. The comedies I like are more intellectual and verbiose...not "shock" comedies or slap stick. Think more along the lines of "Clerks", "Chasing Amy", Monty Python, "High Fidelity", "Spinal Tap", and "The Producers". Those are in my top ten comedy lists.

Please tell me that someone else here agrees. Seeing the high ratings at IMDB (80% having gave it a seven or above) is terrible...considering I gave it a three, only because it wasn't the absolute worst movie I've ever seen (that nod goes to "Undercover Brother", which I had walked out of). Thoughts?

Same...a little overated, but I think its my fault for letting the hype overtake me. I bought it a week ago, but have yet to watch it a 2nd time.

I see what you're getting at. I've only seen it once, and I probably won't watch it again because I did find it stupid. It had some hilarious parts, but it seemed to drag on for way too long.

One of the most underrated lines of that movie though, is when everyone is watching the video of Jay's baby inside his wife's stomach and David goes "That looks like the Doppler Radar".

I probably laughed the hardest at that joke out of every joke in the movie. :y4:

I agree 100%. I don't know if I laughed the entire time I watched it.

Re: The 40 Year Old Virgin

I don't even really think the length was that much of an issue...if I was laughing then time wouldn't be a factor. The fact that I was just staring in awe at the rampant idiocy on my fancy TV was the problem. For the record I didn't like "Old School" as well (a movie that fans of "Virgin" seem to also hold in high esteem), but at least I laughed during that one. Haven't seen "Wedding Crashers", but would it even be worth it?

Watching "Virgin" made me think of the critics who hate "The Boondocks" on TV because it says the n-word. There has to be more humor other than shocking language..."Boondocks" has it, this Hollywood travesty did not.

I thought the movie was a little lame, and I couldn't understand it's popularity. I saw no chemistry between Carell and his girlfriend, and the whole concept of making a movie about a 40 year old virgin seemed to be aimed at junior highschoolers.

Wedding Crashers is worth a rent. Vince Vaughan is in another crazy, horny man role. The end is lackluster, but the rest of the movie is hilarious. I was on the floor laughing my *** off on a couple lines...
