Anyone listen to JAZZ?
And I don't mean "smooth jazz," I mean jazz. Monk, Trane, Miles, and the rest of those cats. Or newer, more contemporary jazz like Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau, Dave Holland, James Carter, John Scofield, and such. Or jazz-funk hybrids like MMW, Stanton Moore, Charlie Hunter....Anyone? I listen to all kinds of music, but jazz is pretty much where it's at for me especially on my iPod during my workdays. I had a teacher in high school who hooked me on the stuff and the rest, as they say, is history. My jazz CD collection is pretty massive now.

Re: Anyone listen to JAZZ?
Why does everybody hate "smooth jazz"?
Anywho i'm not the biggest jazz fan in the world but I can listen to it and enjoy it a lot. If I had to pick favourites it'd be Grover Washington (or is his style too smooth for you?) and Miles Davis (I have bitches brew on CD)Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Anyone listen to JAZZ?
I don't know why everybody hates smooth jazz, but I know why I hate it. Because it's got no edge and no spark and is completely dull and unexciting. For me, it's just a completely unemotional flatline. But that's just me....different strokes for different folks.Originally posted by SPTOWhy does everybody hate "smooth jazz"?

Grover Washington is indeed too smooth for me, but Bitches Brew is great. Have you heard "Kind of Blue" by Miles? It's a lot more straight-ahead than BB, but a lot of people regard is as the beginning and end of jazz music. I don't like it quite that much, but it is very good.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Re: Anyone listen to JAZZ?
There are some pretty generally accepted "desert island" discs that nobody should really be without. Everyone's got their favorites of course, but some are just universally regarded as classics. Hit me up with a PM if you want any advice on where to begin, based on what you like in terms of instruments, genre, mood, etc....Originally posted by greenegtI like Jazz, and would like to start buying some albums, but I have no idea where to begin. I guess I should start with the artists you listed, Skerik.

Re: Anyone listen to JAZZ?
I have a question about Miles Davis. Why was he just inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame with the 2006 class? Davis just kinda sticks out in the 2006 class as an odd choice. Yet they have described part of his music like this:Originally posted by forensicdMiles Davis is the man! Kind of Blue is the best jazz album made imo.
I have never listened to Miles Davis before outside of little clips on TV or movies, or really any jazz, did he have much of a rock sound to his music?Miles Davis – Miles Davis was one of the 20th Century’s most creative artists changing the sound of popular music many times in his six decade career. His musical experimentation beginning in the late 60’s created a fusion of jazz with rock and roll, soul, funk and hip hop.

Re: Anyone listen to JAZZ?
It is kind of an odd choice, but Miles basically invented jazz-rock fusion music. Or if he didn't invent it, he at least made it popular mostly because of Bitches Brew and subsequent releases like Live-Evil. Following Miles, a lot of jazz bands tended towards rock like Herbie Hancock, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Pat Metheny band, etc. Additionally, a lot of rock bands branched out and played more free form jazz-style jams, most notably the Dead.Originally posted by aukevinI have never listened to Miles Davis before outside of little clips on TV or movies, or really any jazz, did he have much of a rock sound to his music?
So I would say that Miles represents the builder of the bridge between jazz and rock, hence his inclusion in the Rock & Roll HoF.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Re: Anyone listen to JAZZ?
I listen to all types of Jazz, from the older classics to newer types. I focus mainly on Guitar Jazz, as I'm a guitarist and working on my Jazz stylings. All Jazz has it's merits smooth or other wise. Jazz is extremely free-form. I won't get into music theory but suffice it to say even the smooth stuff everyone dis's is challenging to play.
Guitar Jazz to check out, Obviously there's Wes Montgomery, George Benson, and Pat Metheny, also give a shot to Larry Carlton, Randy Jacobs, Charlie Hayden, Eddie Duran, Earl Klugh, and also check out Paul Jackson Jr. he's a great guitarist.
I have a big collection too, and I have a lot of the older swing/big band sound. Got a bit of the newer stuff, like with Susan Tedeschi, Rhett Miller, Keith Jarrett, Joyce Cooling.
Have you heard the Coltrane/Monk lost recordings. Awesome stuff.Comment

But yeah I listen to jazz.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: Anyone listen to JAZZ?
It's still Jazz and alot of people like it (even though a lot hate it also). I like some it (yes there is good smooth jazz out there...for example the older "Rippington" albums) and mostly listen to it after a long day of exams or work to relax. It does it's job better then any other genre in music IMO...it's called "smooth" for a reason. If I want to listen to "really" listen to music then i'll put on something else. I also listen to the other types of Jazz sometimes but im not a big fan. Miles Davis and Coltrane are great though.Originally posted by jmood88I know it's not new, that doesn't change the fact that it's crappy.Comment
