IMO, this series wasted a lot of potential. They had a great basis with the X-Men cartoon that ran during the 90s, much like Batman Begins had a basis with Batman: The Animated Series. The X-Men movies lacked a really thrilling, interesting story and the character relationships were lacking to me. Hopefully in 5-10 years, somebody can come back to this franchise and do it justice.

Personally I think Singer did a great job with the X-Men series.... Of course it's no Spiderman or Batman Begins but what Singer did was make two very respectable movies that were entertaining and indulged the fanboys. IMO the X-Men series is without a doubt a success.http://flotn.blogspot.com

Originally posted by SPTOI think part of the problem is the amount of characters in the X-Men. There's only so much one can do with so many characters and 2 hrs of film. I think they've done an ok job with it.
Gambit = best X-Man. He was so bad *** and like, my idol growing up.
Also....I thought the trailer looked amazing. To see this come of the chaos everyone thought this was going to be is really awesome.Comment

Re: Latest trailer for X3 The Last Stand
Did Gambit have the best power? No....but he was the best character.
He had a great backstory, a great storyline, a great all-around character.
Plus, I thought his power was pretty cool(He could charge anything...playing cards are just easy to carry around)Comment

Re: Latest trailer for X3 The Last Stand
When he was a thief it was interesting. Then they started dropping hints that he was the third Summers brother and then he worked for Mr.Sinister and helped murder the Morlocks, that's when things got bad. The last time I love the way Gambit was written was in the early issues X-Treme Xmen. Not too many people write him well.Favorite Teams:

I like Gambit's power because it's unique. He creates kinetic energy and transforms something as simple as a playing card into an explosive. Playing cards fit Gambit perfectly considering he's a theif.

Originally posted by APOCHis backstory told on-film would be sick. IMO, they need to recast Rogue in the next installments if she is to be involved with Gambit because what's-her-*** doesn't do it for me. They need to make Rogue hotter.

And I agree about Rouge...however...they seemed to want to portray her as a younger character....not the Southern-Bell character who could fly and had super-human strength.Comment

Re: Latest trailer for X3 The Last Stand
Gambit was just a poor man's Wolverine. He had no depth, no layers to his character. He was just meant to look cool and act cool. Maybe it's more of a problem with the writers who chose to focus on Wolverine instead of Gambit but he's never been written very well. I have no problems with the concept, though outside of the trenchcoat, his Jim Lee era costume is pretty terrible (some bad ***, the guy is clad in pink). For that reason alone I find him overrated, and I wasn't sad that they killed him off so quickly in the Ultimate X-Men run (though this is Marvel, where no one stays dead so he'll likely return at some point).
The most compelling X-Men characters have always been the ones who struggle to fit in with humanity and wrestle with some innder demons or conflicts with their powers. That is why Rogue, Beast, Nightcrawler and others work so well. Wolverine works well because he was the original bad *** for the team and the concept surrounding his abilites, while fairly simple, were given an incredibly creative backstory and shrouded in mystery. Plus he was given a great rogue's gallery (Sabretooth, Omega Red, Deathstrike, etc).
The problem with the films, as someone pointed out, is the abundance of characters. Everyone wants to see their favorite character get some face time, I'm no different in that regard myself. The writers however chose to focus on Wolverine and really did not spend much time with anyone else. Jean and Rogue have been given ample time to develop, but only because they both share a unique relationship with Wolverine. Cyclops and Storm have almost been completely ignored and other characters were reduced to brief cameos (Colossus) or were inadequately developed (Pyro, Sabretooh, Toad, even Nightcrawler). I felt X-Men 2 would have been far more interesting if they had kept Stryker as a priest convinced mutants were creations of Satan and he set his sights on Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler being the perfect choice because he is a man of faith in the guise of a demon. They could have included Mystique in the plot (as she is the mother of Nightcrawler) and I'm sure they could have worked Wolverine in some way. If they really wanted to just tell the story of Weapon X then they should not have used Stryker and didn't need to add a character like Nightcrawler. They could have added a one-dimensional character like Psylocke to throw into some cool action scenes and fanboys would have been content to see someone new. Deathstrike could have still been a villain as well, or perhaps Omega Red.
This is why I have a hard time watching these films and not seeing the wasted opportunities. The first two are not bad, by any means, but they aren't fantastic or even must see films. I think the third will be entertaining, and I have no problems at the moment with the direction of the story and such. A traditional recounting of the Phoenix Saga would be horrible on film, it just wouldnt fit with the setting and the story is a bit "out there" (for those of you unaware, Jean Grey becomes possessed by a cosmic entity called the Phoenix who grants her near limitless power which drives her mad, she kills some galaxies, some beings in space do not take too kindly to that and want to see her destroyed, and the X-Men are caught in the middle - thats the abbreviated version anyways, its pretty complex).Comment
