    A History of Violence

Just watched this movie....wow. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that more effectively used violence to communicate what it was trying to say. And the violence, while graphic and brutal, was very realistically depicted. It was quick, not stylized, and shocking. Viggo Mortensen was really good in the leading role and whole movie had a very deliberate, unsettling tone. Personally, I really liked it. Although maybe that's not even the right word to use. It's the kind of movie that sticks with you, but I'm not sure how eager I would be to see it again given its tone and its message. Overall though, a very good movie in my opinion.

    Anyone else see it?

It's on my top ten list for 2005 for sure and easily could have been nominated for Best Picture.

I really wanted to see this movie before I did see it, and I was disappointed, probably because I didn't get it or something. Perhaps someone could explain what made this movie so great? I'm not trying to troll or anything, I wanted to like this movie, but I think it just went over my head or something.

1ST thing off *Spoilers* are in my post in case you intend to watch this abismal crapfest.

I totally disagree. Me, my wife, my buddy, everyone that I know that had seen the movie all agree. It was a crappy film. It was all over the place, and badly acted in.

The 69 scene with his wife!? WTF!? Way over the top, the anger scene on the stairway, next thing you know they are going at it, then after the fact she's mad at him again?

The violence was anything but realistic bro, trust me I've seen a man get shot. You dont have 10 ounce baggy packets of blood taped to wherever you are shot LOL. In this movie, every clown that gets shot has a beer cans worth of blood come flying out the other side LOL.

Viggo smashes that one mobster in the nose like 4 times, now its comepletely missing off his face!? WTF?

They guy (Viggo) has been away from the hitman mob scene long enough to have raised what appears to be a 17/18 year old boy, yet he still has lightning fast reflexes and can take down men in 3's with guns in seconds flat.

William friggin Hurst as an organised Philly crimeboss!? LOL Did you hear the way he was speaking. Even Viggo, when he showed up in Philly to see his bro and puts back on his Cusack voice....awfull.

They tried too hard to portray the perfect loving family in the beginning of the film, even my wife was laughing at how hard they were trying to get the message to the viewer. It's like we arent supposed to know there was going to be a drastic turn around in their lives. Suddenly everyones angry and arguing.

It was simply just to incredulous of a story, 1.5 out of 5 stars to me.

Remember, I'm not arguing here. Merely stating my opinion. you are obviously entitled to your view on the film.

That little girl had to be the worse kid actor ever... The movie almost felt like a spoof. The sex scenes suprised me... and seemed kind of thrown in as to say oh yeah they have sex too

Wow, man. I guess we just have very different takes on the movie. Lots of the points you enumerated I thought were done for a reason and were very purposeful. Like you said, stuff like the sexuality was a little over the top, but again I thought it served a purpose instead of being gratuitous. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

The movie's running at 85% on RottenTomatoes though....so I dunno if it qualifies as an "abysmal crapfest."

The movie seemed poorly casted and written... The bully for what ever reason he hated the son was pretty stupid and weak. When was the last time you saw a fight where guys waited turns to fight? The whole scene with him running home on the hurt foot... it just seemed lame and when he gets there the wife is the living room waiting and the son is in the kitchen as if oblivious to whats happening. Just a lot of holes in the movie mixed with some unnecessary sex scenes and and some violent scenes that seemed really fake.... Halle Berry won a oscar for screaming make me feel good in one of the worse movies Ive seen ever so this movie getting critical acclaim doesnt shock me.

                Unrealistic best describes the movie

                  Spot on BigTig!!!

My wife said it before me! She was a terrible actress, and not good on the eyes to boot! (Dont kill me, just stating facts).

Those sex scenes supprised many a family I'm sure.

You fail to mention my take on the false, exaggerated violence. Was I off there as well? Please....enlighten me as you did on the other issues.

As much as I love RottenTomatoes, F them. It does qualify as an abysmal crapfest in my book. keyword being my.

Extreme Sexuality + Exaggerated Violence = F'ed up movie. In my book anyways.

I wasn't trying to enlighten you, just stating an opinion like you did. I gave you my take and said "different strokes for different folks," so I'm sorry if you're offended or something. Obviously, judging by RottenTomatoes, many reviewers "got" the film and liked it for what it is. You obviously didn't like it. But I'm just trying to say that there was a lot more going on in the film than a lousy child actress and some over-the-top sex and violence. The movie had a larger point than that, imo.

Btw, I'm not really sure how you could be surprised by the content of the movie considering its title and the fact that it tells you at the beginning why it's rated R. I don't really see how the sex is over-the-top. I can think of 5 other movies released in 2005 off the top of my head that I saw that had more sexual content.

Also, if you liked Crash, I don't see how you can mock a movie for being unrealistic. Sometimes the characters are over-the-top and unrealistic for a reason.
