Re: The Who vs Led Zeppelin
I have basically all of each band's albums that are worth having and I like The Who much more than Zeppelin. Who's Next and Quadrophenia basically never leave my iPod.
In my opinion, when you look up "Rock and Roll" in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of The Who. Their lyrics, their sound, the fury with which they played, their lifestyle....they epitomized rock and roll. The members of Zeppelin were all no doubt incredibly talented, but there's a raw emotion that The Who captured better than just about anyone else ever did, imo.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Originally posted by BGarrett7Zeppelin. I enjoy The Who, don't get me wrong, but their catalog simply isn't as strong as LZ's. I think track-for-track there isn't a bad song there, not something I can say about The Who.Comment

Re: The Who vs Led Zeppelin
While they were contemporaries, I find it very hard to compare and choose between the two bands. My thoughts? I don't think there is any need to pick between the two. Both bands were great at what they did. I think both bands had a couple lackluster albums, although they followed masterpieces in both cases.
Buy Tommy, get some headphones, and enjoy.Comment

Re: The Who vs Led Zeppelin
For both of these band for many years all I had was their greatest hits album(the LZ double "Remasters" and The Who "My Generation, The Very Best...") and I could respect LZ for what they did in terms of paving the way for hard rock and for making some great epic songs. But in the end, The Who were just more fun to listen to. Any band with a song like "Pictures of Lilly" or "I'm A Boy" definitely know how to have a good time with some teenage humor.
I can respect LZ as the better band, they release what, 6 or 7 top notch albums in a row to start their career? And they influenced too many bands to count. However, give me the option of listening to The Who's greatest hits or LZ's, and I will wake The Who everytime. They made short, fun rock songs and they were pretty much perfect at doing it.Comment

Re: The Who vs Led Zeppelin
Wow, that's a tough, tough call.
I think Zeppelin was more consistently brilliant during the span of its career, but The Who's peak was better, as albums like "Quadrophenia," "Who's Next" and "Tommy" were slightly better than any Zeppelin album.
Both had such great individual parts that fused to form great bands. Both had great vocalists with among the best pipes in rock; great lead guitarists, as I think Townshend is every bit as good as Page in some regards, especially the power with which he played; rock-solid bass and nuts drummers.
The one edge The Who had was that Townshend wrote better lyrics than Plant and Page. You don't find anything of the scope of "Tommy" in Zeppelin's collection.
It's really a matter of taste. Zeppelin was firmly rooted in the blues tradition with overtures toward metal, especially on the early albums, while The Who was more British Invasion pop rock with an incredible mix of passion, sensitivity and raw fury.
You can't go wrong with either. If forced to choose, I'd take The Who by a short, curly one. But that's personal preference only!
Take care,

Re: The Who vs Led Zeppelin
I like Zeppelin more, because I just get this sort of "epic" feel. I don't know. Then again, I havent heard The Who nearly as much as I should have, so I can't say for sure.Comment
