I didn't consider the Subway and hair saloon purchases, that makes sense now. He only bought like 8 things from Wal-Mart, that would be ridiculous if his card was frozen over that, but add in the other stuff and it makes sense.

I work at a bank and the Debit Card lady sits right behind me... you're card wont be frozen unless there is suspicious activity (ie several large purchases when normally small, etc) but I dont believe they monitor that a bunch of purchases are coming from the same locale. The only time it is automatically "frozen" is if you spend over $1000 in a 24 hour time period, which I doubt he did.

The only thing I would assume happened was that one time he tried it, it didnt work (could be any reason, processor down, card wouldnt swipe, etc.) and so he freaked and thought "theyre on to me, my criminal masterplan is being foiled, I must run."

That's one of the most entertaining articles I've read in a long time.

I almost want to try that.

                          My guess:

Walmart, particularly the "SUPER/MEGA"(or whatever they're called-I NEVER shop there) Walmarts position themselves as a "one-stop-shop" for all everyone would ever need. Many social critics argue that this represents a breakdown of community and uniqueness, with specialized retailers performing specialized tasks each with their own associated experience. This is by design, and Walmart size and infrastructure allows it to become a generic, monolithic replacement. Where else can you buy groceries, pick up a Xbox 360, get your hair cut and dyed, cut a duplicate key, buy a gun, and get new tires for your SUV all in one place?

What this kid did was take Walmarts' intended function(implicit) and see how far it could be stretched. Could a Walmart provide everything needed for subsistence? Haven't we become such a consumer society that community and interaction are downplayed, and most of our wants and desires for happiness come through the acquiring of consumer goods?

If this kid parlays this into something bigger(not lame TV fame, but a book or articule or some sort of larger experiment/movement), I think its downright BRILLIANT.
