Whose great idea was this? I mean seriously, dinnerware you can eat? I just polished off a bread bowl full of delicious Lobster Newberg soup. Not only does the bowl provide a warm, solid container for your soup while you eat it, but no longer must you make that agonizing decision between a roll or crackers. Get the crackers son, your roll is your bowl!
Detractors of the bread bowl point out that they don't work well with thinner soups and this is true. The reason being that the bowl will absorb the broth and become too soggy, too quickly. But for thicker, cheese or cream-based soups, the bread bowl is amazing. After you finish the soup it's like a whole 'nother meal of fresh-baked bread saturated in soupy, flavorful goodness.
The inventor of the bread bowl is anyone's guess. But to that person, whoever they may be, I offer kudos and a hearty thank you.
