My PS2 Finally Died...Suggestions?

After 5 years of relentless usuage my PS2 seems to have died...

I get 'disc read error' every time I try to load...

Went from rare, to occasional, to every time...

I was hopin' that this thing would last until PS3 was not only out, but declared 'bug free' by consumers...

Since that's about 6 months to a year away, I'll need to replace this one...

Am I better off with a refurbished one or a new one?

Old school 'fatbox' (like I have) or the newer slimline?

Where should I purchase it from?

What's a good price?...

All info greatly appreciated...

I'm out of my element on this decision...

From what a friend of mine told me that works at Gamestop, I'd wait till e3 after a little afterwards to pick up a ps2. He says there will be a price drop at or around e3

Go slim....do not buy another PS2 Hummer.
Or you can pony up and get yourself a 360

I'd say get an XBOX 360 and a couple of games, but if that's not an option, wait til after E3 to get a slim PS2.

Well gentz, i have a launch PS2 & got the same DRE, & i called SONY and they wanted 75 to fix, & 45 for refurbished or vice versa...i forget

this is ALOT easier than it looks...it's simple man...just follow the directions, and see what ya come with...i did this, and my PS2 reads EVERYTHING!!
since then, i've fixed 5 others DRE problems for my co workers and they owe me BIGTIME!:wink:

Try and fix it, I've done it and it works. It will save you some money too. If you're planning on getting a PS3 it would be a shame to have to buy another PS2 when it won't be needed in a few months.

I did the above mentioned fix, and it worked temporarily.. Then it died again.

I ended up buying a slim PS2 for retail and have no complaints. PS2 is still the best system out IMO, and I'm certainly biased. I had Xbox a few years ago and sold it, going back to PS2.

I'd buy a system now instead of playing the waiting game on pricedrops. Else, you will just keep putting the purchase off and never be content.

I've blasted it with forced air and ran a Maxell lens cleaner (before it stopped readin that) a bunch of times...

But I'll try this as well...

Can't hurt...the thing has no trade in value at this point...

Well, I tried this fix and was surprised how clean the inside of my PS2 was...

Spotless...no cat hair...nothing...

So, I blew it out with forced air reset the lens (according to the instructions) a few times and...

NOTHIN'...

Still won't read anything...

I've had it for 5 years, got about 10 years of usage out of it...

I think it just burned out...

I'm going to price some slimlines...
