He didn't bring up race,so why did you? Gang members are like M and M's. They come in all colors.

If he is a cop then I am sure he is disgusted with these senseless acts of violence. My uncle Paul is a cop in Detroit. He's Black and shares the same feelings as MattG. My uncle says "**** the dumb" . The reason why? He has seen so many innocent victims hurt,or killed by gun toting thugs including his son. He was 17 and heading to college in NYC that fall. He was killed by a Crip that thought he was someone else.

I left Detroit in 01. I had enough. I lived off Mack Ave on the eastside. I was walking out of a coney island resturant and caught a stray in the shoulder. At the time I was with my wife and 6 year old son. My brother Anthony was killed when he was 13. He was caught in a crossfire coming home from his school just off of Van ****. Senseless.

It's sad this young brother was killed. But you have to ask, what the hell was he doing with a gun? He was in a spot know for violence and he was there at 4 or 5 in the morning. If he didn't have the gun I think he would be alive today. He put himself in a bad position and he paid the price.

Why do so many brothers that make their money in the rap game feel the need to live the life they rap about? Is it a "keeping it real thing"? Respect? If so it does nothing to help our community. What would be "real" is to stop shooting each other over stupid *** beefs. I don't see Coldplay beefing with Nickleback over street cred. It makes us look bad. One thug all thugs is how we are judged. It's not fair. But we are the only ones that are going to change that perception. But it just keeps getting worse. You know what's sad? Some people will glorify his death. They will say he went out like a soldier. What a waste.

I'm not trying defend those rappers who are getting into senseless violence, but I don't think you're looking at the whole picture about rappers in the industry.

Many of these rappers have been living the street life long before they get in the rap industry. While there are people who are using rap as a tool to make money to better their lives and get out of the rough neighborhood they're in as soon as possible, there are also others in the rap game who take rapping solely as a hobby to make money on the side and that's it, while they continue to do what they do on the "dark side of the forest." Even if they eventually make more money rapping about it than doing their street thing... doesn't matter. Rapping remains a secondary thing in their eyes and they are not quitting their primary job. Even though some rappers who become successful and have the opportunity to move out of the rough neighborhoods, quietly raise a family in the suburbs, etc. they just love the street life too much to completely give it up. So they remain in the hood and carry on.

And for a few others, the street life is all they know and all they want to know. You just can't tell rappers living the street life who have been venturing a lot of the rough neighborhoods and environments, hanging tight with their boys for most if not all of their lives, etc. to get out of there and ditch their boys because they're "bad influences" or something along those lines. That's just not how it goes. That's a big time lifestyle adjustment that they are not prepared to make. Know the saying, "You can take a person out of the hood, but you cannot take the hood (mentality) out of the person." It rings true. Dudes just refusing to leave their street lifestyle and friends, even if it's for the sake of improving the quality of their life. They don't wanna hear it.

Some rappers act like that because they know that there are jealous people and they need to protect themsevles.

              Re: Proof (D12) is dead?

Rap has become the "crack" of this decade. Everyone is trying to come up and hit it big "slinging" thier product. Image is as important as anything especially in the beginging locally cause a new record label pops up every other day. Another issue is that many of these companies who start out small and local have money invested from drug dealers looking for a way to "clean" the money in a legit business.

                    First off, great post.

Second, here is the story that I heard on the radio this afternoon. Proof was in an argument with another man, the other person who was wounded, and it escalated to the point where Proof pulled out his gun, and pistol whipped the guy numerous times. Proof then pulled the trigger, wounding the other man, and that's when the man's brother pulled out his gun and shot Proof in the head.

I feel bad for his family and friends, but I can't say that I'm sorry for Proof.

I have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as retirement In hip hop. Theres only forced retirement..A bullet to the head..How many rappers have been killed in the past 3 yrs!! Thing is, a lot get money, but still act & behave like they were poor & in the hood. Keep the same friends etc..Seriously, you need to separate yourself from this..Hang with ppl who don't get introuble & who don't influence you to do bad shzt..Move to a better area..Avoid your old stomping grounds..If not, the past will catch up with you..

like the saying goes , you can take the man out the hood but cant take the hood out the man. that is true for the majority of ppl.

As others have said I did not bring up race...why did you? I have often found that those who yell loudest are often the guilty.

I am a cop and I see stuff day in and day out I can't explain or understand. Why do people continue to kill each other over the most trivial of things. The last one I went to was a few weeks ago. The two individuals never knew each other. One just knew that the other wasn't a local banger and when he claimed and the other didn't respond...he shot at him. Worst part was he missed his target and hit the other guys girl behind him.

If my comments offend you...I'm sorry. My job is to get the worst people off the streets so the rest of us can live as much of a crime free life as possible. People who have no respect for others, carry guns, then go out drinking and doing who knows what else fall in that category. They are unpredictable and more importantly dangerous. If he wasn't a famous rapper would you want him in your local hangout, around your family, living in your neighborhood?
                              - The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.
