So i just downloaded itunes on my computer here at work, and I signed into my account, so my balance shows $7 and some odd cents, same as at home. So if I buy a song here, will it be transferred to my home laptop where all my library is? How does this work? Can I buy a song here, load it onto my ipod here and not overwrite my library?

Logically speaking, the computer you download the song on is the computer you are stuck with.
Are there ways around it? Sure. But it can get tricky.
The most obvious option would be to burn the song to CD and then just rip it onto your other computer. That's the least amount of hassle, and you're out, what twenty cents for the CD-R?
If you don't have a burner on your work computer, that's where things get a little tricky.
You're going to have to use a program like EphPod in order to access the actual music files on your iPod then. So, not only are you going to have to load the new song onto your iPod from your work computer, but that's also going to require the iPod to delete those files currently on it, unless you also have those stored on the computer you're on now. That can get a little time consuming depending on how big your iPod is. Then you are going to have to load your extracting program of choice onto your home computer in order to be able to pull the file in question off your iPod and stick it into your iTunes library there. Plus, you'll also have to reload your entire library -- or playlist, depending on how you have the synching set up -- back onto your iPod. -

You can have a song on up to 5 cpu's. As long as you have your itunes username and password you are good to go. It is no big deal at all. Just put the song on any kind of portable media, and put it on whatever cpu you please. you can always deauthorize cpu's too.Originally posted by BGarrett7Comment

You could just email the song you downloaded to yourself, then redownload it to your home computer.
If you downloaded a buncha songs though, then definitely go the CD-R or USB pen drive route.Comment
