Satisfaction? Yesterday? Help? Smells like teen spirit? Light My Fire? Stairway to Heaven?
Sheesh these songs wouldn't even make the top 10 list of those respective artists. The key to a legit list of songs is their staying power and any of these songs are annoying to listen to today.
In the case of the Stones and Beatles they had so many better songs than that bubblegum drivel that were intended to be simple pop songs and for some reason people think they are legendary songs. Satisfaction was even intended to be filler on an album that's how much the Stones thought of it and why Jagger hates playing it live.Comment

#166 Lose Yourself- Eminem
I dont know if I disagree... but that came out of left field with the first 165 being all classic rock, funk, etc songs.

I think this list was compiled with the idea of these songs being good/great and having a big impact in the mainstream to a certain extent.
So I wouldn't go as far as to say that they really think Lose Yourself is the 3rd greatest rap song of all time. Rolling Stone tends to do this will all of their "all time" lists.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

Once again... I can't agree with ANYTHING that Rolling Stones puts up... I absolutely hate their magazine, and I pretty much boycott it. I will never voluntarily purchase that magazine, EVER!SAN ANTONIO SPURSComment

Pretty much. It isn't a straight list of the 500 best songs ever, they put more into it like popularity and mainstream impact.Originally posted by ThrashaI think this list was compiled with the idea of these songs being good/great and having a big impact in the mainstream to a certain extent.

"Satisfaction" has a lot of staying power. If you play that song to a kid that knows music they'll instantly recognize the group that sang it.
"Yesterday" has the most staying power of any song ever written as it's the most covered song in history. You do know that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery right?
"Smells like Teen Spirit" is the anthem of the whole Seattle Grunge movement, nuff said there.
"Stairway to Heaven" is a standard tune for anyone of that generation so i'd say that's pretty impactful right there.
I agree about "help!" but remember it was one of the songs that symbolized the Beatles emergence in the North American music scene.
As for the RS listing I think "A change is gonna come" should've made the top 10. It's one of the best songs i've ever heard.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Huge shocker that The Message was the highest rated hip-hop song. The list is fine cept for the hip-hop, why do these critics even include rap since they have no clue about it?
Every single list has the few token hits from the 80's and then a buncha Eminem songs and a Tupac song. Completely idiotic.Last edited by ehh; 04-16-2006, 05:10 PM."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Do you have a problem with "the message" being the #1 rap/hip hop song? I don't see how it's such a bad pick as that song basically pushed rap/hip hop to the mainstream.Originally posted by ehhHuge shocker that The Message was the highest rated hip-hop song.
