    Van Halen

Van Halen is one of my all-time favorite bands. As we all know they have gone through 3 singers over the last almost 30 years. It saddens me to see them go out the way they did back in 2004 after the Sammy Hagar - VH reunion tour that they had. I guess a lot had to do with Eddie Van Halen's drinking that caused Sammy and Mike to finish the tour and than call it quits.

It is a shame that this happened.

I just hope that we do get a box set released one of these days with unreleased materials as I had heard they had recorded a new album with Gary Cherone before he was fired and then there was an album's worth of songs that was recorded with David Lee Roth in the summer of 2002. Plus they have tons of unreleased demos that would really make the boxset awesome.

    What is everyone's thoughts?

they've gone through lead singers like you have gone through names... hehe.. Van Halen was a great band - i really got into them in the Roth days with the songs like "Jump", "Panama", & "Hot for Teacher"... ps- Roth was one bad radio personality though..

Any unreleased master tapes with Cherone as lead singer should be burned immediately. That guy was absolutely AWFUL as VH's lead singer, probably because he was completely dreadful with Xtreme, which sucked like a Hoover.

I'd love to hear the recent studio stuff with Dave, though.

      Take care,

They came to Champaign last year, and I got some pretty good seats. I personally prefer Hagar (I know, I'm crazy) and I thought they put on the most amazing, fun show I've ever seen. I can imagine that even Roth-fans enjoyed the show quite a bit. Great band, period.

I like Hagar better too. Roth is a little goofy to me, but I still really enjoy the old VH music with him. I saw them live back around '97 or '98, it was a cool show.

I'm a Hagar fan and can't wait till his latest album drops in a few months.

I'll take Roth, any day. Hagar veered VH toward p*ssy rock, and for that I'll never forgive him.

Just about everything VH did with Roth ROCKED. You can't say that about some of the Van Hagar albums. Too many gay ballads and borderline pop songs with an Eddie solo tossed in to give it some sort of rock authority.

              Take care,

I liked VH better in the DLR days better than Van Hagar days. I will say I think Sammy is probably a better song writer than DLR. The early days, VH covered some other peoples music, like the Kinks and Roy Orbison, etc......

I still like old Van Halen, running with the devil, Jamie's crying! I still listen to those songs. I like Sammy too, but the songs were more like love ballots and instead of rock songs, but that is just my opinion!

Everyone forgets though that Eddie Van Halen had a lot to do with the writing of songs for both DLR & SH.

Most of Sammy's songs had "Love" in them with Van Halen, but with the Waboritas and his solo career he doesn't sing many songs with "Love". Is that telling you something.

I also like DLR, and I hope that the songs they recorded in 2002 get released.

My gripe with Van Hagar was that Eddie got turned into a keyboardist on half the songs...

That was Eddie's own desire. Once Roth was out of the band, Eddie felt Van Halen could finally do the music that he had wanted with the vocal range of Hagar. Eddie's first instrument was actually piano, and he won quite a few awards for his piano playing when he was younger.

Anyway, Van Halen is my favorite band of all time. The six studio albums with DLR are phenomenal, and the only fuss can really be made about Diver Down, but that's half cover tunes anyway. I was unfortunately born too late to see Van Halen and had to settle for both the Sammy and Dave tour and then the Van Hagar reunion in 2004. Eddie was high off his *** and sounded like crap, and I was very dissapointed. The interviews that have slowly been coming out from both Michael Anthony and Sammy really show how bad Ed has gotten and I fear I'll never see a sober EVH play live. The interview that I found even more interesting than those was an interview with Ed that Guitar World or Guitar One just published from after the release of Diver Down. He basically says that Michael Anthony is worthless and that he adds nothing to the band. If he felt that way then, I don't know how this band made it through the 80's.

Eddie is just an egotistical @ss. I love the band even when Gary Cherone was singing.
