Re: Which of you Fellow OSers own a Hybrid Vehicle?

I was thinking about Hybrids...my commute is 110 miles each way(thank GOD I only have to go in two days a week) but it's all highway.....and I thought that was a big letdown on the MPG. Maybe I'm mistaken(I hope!)
JohnnySkin...what kind of MPG is your vehicle SUPPOSED to get?

I was looking at two other vehicles..neither of them hybrids....the Volkswagen Jetta TDI(deisel) which gets 44 MPG. The only problem is you cannot buy one in New York(bogus..)
The other was the Toyota Yaris which is rated at 40 MPG. The Yaris has been around in Europe for a while...so I'm not worried about getting a "new" design and getting all the new design problems...

Well, if you go by what the EPA says, you will be dissapointed for almost every hybrid vehicle. The way the EPA tests for mileage does not reflect how people drive on the road.

Why do the EPA fuel economy numbers almost always seem to be off base? It has a lot to do with the way the EPA evaluates new cars and trucks for their energy consumption.

When was the last time you topped out at only 60 mpg on the highway? Do you ever have your AC on? So you can see why the EPA numbers are inflated. They're inflated for other cars too, its just that nobody really seems to care.

So, there is no answer of what you're supposed to get, only what you can expect to get......

The Highlander Hybrid is rated at 31/27 (City/Highway). I'll report more when I drain the first tank.

Hey DXZeke (or anyone else with a Toyota Nav System)...what are your equalizer settings? I don't have presets on mine, and am wondering what the best setting is for bass/mid/treble sounds. Any help, Toyota owner or audiophile, would be MUCH appreciated. If it matters, I usually listen to rock, jazz, Top-40, oldies, and talk radio (with a "wee" bit of rap and R&B thrown in). Thanks!

            No smugness here!
With my 2001 Dodge Durango getting me a whopping 12.5 MPG....it's almost down to survival!
Plus, now that I've been driving so much(I still have a place in the city...so sometimes it's not so bad)...I'm starting to beat up my truck, which I REALLY need in the winter months(and when I have to haul something.
I think this thread is starting to feel...practicality!

Just got a Prius ourselves. Love the car. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanted to put down money. The saving of the gas is alone worth it. I already drove slow and sensible on the road so it's not even that hard for me to do the easy driving. Wonder if anyone else has jsut purchased a new car or is still happy with their purchase.

When I hear people talking about saving a lot of money with the Prius, it makes me a little skeptical and I'll tell you why. I honestly don't know how much one costs, around 19-20k? I compare it physically to a Honda Civic and the Civics only run about 14-15k if I remember correctly. That's about a 4-5k difference in price, which is A LOT of gas.

I don't think Civics are near that cheap anymore, but then again I have no idea how much a Prius is.

ive heard u have to replace batteries at around 80000 mileson hybrids . is that true and how much $ does that run. ive heard $ 1500 minimum -they seem to still be expensive, im looking for something in the 40+ mpg range

We own a 2008 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. It gets about 21 MPG (22 city and 20 Hwy). We weren't in the market for a hybrid, but got a great deal on it, it was fully loaded and because of the hybrid tax credit, it about the same as a regular one with many fewer options. It's a V-8, it's got power when I need it and it can tow more weight then I'll ever need.

I believe the regular Tahoe's get about 15-17, so while it's about 25% - 33% better, 20 MPG isn't something to wow over. We previously had a 4Runner, which got about 19-20, so it's nice to have the extra room, the extra features and still get comperable mileage.

Hell go get one of those Clean Diesel VW's that get nearly 60.
