If you know your stuff and can show credentials then if your a graduate getting in the buisness then you should be fine. Or if your in the industry and you know your stuff you should be straight.

But I still believe that outsourcing is bad for the economy.
Yeah I lived in Austin when Dell did that outsourcing. It was funny because they had just opened a baseball park called DELL PARK and people were outraged and writing letters to the Austin Statesman demanding that the DELL PARK be renamed something else. It wasn't long after that (a few months I think) that Dell announced they were bringing the jobs back here.

      Re: Outsourcing IT jobs

I graduated with an MIS degree back in 2000. My final year in college I worked in the IT dept. as a Help Desk Tech serving all professors PC's at the campus. I really enjoyed it, but when I graduated these kinds of jobs were tough to find in the Chicago area.

Once I graduated I was hired by a credit union to do some programming starting at $34K. After 6 months there I couldn't take the drive anymore and the atmosphere stunk as the place was mismanaged so I quit to go into the technology side of the Publishing business. I work for the 3rd largest textbook publisher in the world providing training/Help Desk support to college instructors that have adopted our texts for their courses on our course management systems. The range which my position falls in is $50K-$90K. I've been there for almost 6 years.

My story is that we also have a call center which is tied to our group that provides student registration support. They had 9 people and everytime someone would move on to another position they would replace w/ a temp. Now there are only 4 in that group. Management is talking of either outsourcing their positions to India so students can get 24hr support or they might beef up that area w/ more head count for 24hr support.

      How does that affect me?

If they outsource student support, they might shift the 4 people into my group which is good since my company wants to focus on providing service for the Instructors. We wonder at work if this goes through with the outsource, will Instructor Training/Help Desk support go the way of India in the future for outsourcing? I guess time will tell.
