I have around 350-375 dvds, and i have maybe watched about 40 of them. To me, i like collecting them. I get them cheap as dirt from a place called movie gallery, where they have buy 2 get 2 free on preowned dvds. I buy two for 20 bucks, then get 2 more for free, so thats about 5 bucks a dvd, and sometimes cheaper, becuase after so so many purchases, they throw you a 3 dollar off coupon. I honestly dont think i will ever watch them all, as my collection keeps growing. I sell off ones that i have seen, and end up getting about 3-5 each for them, so in the end i either break even on the dvd, or spend a couple bucks on it. One of these days i will ened up watching more, but right now i just dont have the time, but i still love collecting them. It really is an addiction of sorts, as I pretty much go every week and get 4 dvds. They used to only run the buy 2 get 2 free sales 4 times a year, and i would buy like 20 at a time then, but now they have it everyday, so i can be more selective in my purchases.
When is too much for when it comes to owning DVD's?

Re: When is too much for when it comes to owning DVD's?

Its the act of collecting. Some people collect little spoons, some people collect shoes, some people collect old records, etc. They wont use these items, but still enjoy collecting them. I for one love going out to garage sales and look for dvds to collect, just like I used to with antique toys (I collect old toys from 1900-1960s). Even though they arent worth much, it is still fun to have show off your collection to friends, have your friends borrow movies they havent seen etc.Originally posted by pk500So why buy it if you're not going to watch it? That's the part I don't understand.

Re: When is too much for when it comes to owning DVD's?

I have about 250. I only have movies that I/we have watched multiple times. I've slowed down a lot in the last year because I got most of the movies I wanted. Now I only get new releases for stuff that I really enjoyed in the theater. Another thing I've started getting away from is buying the special editions of everything. Unless It's one of my favorites and has a lot of extra features, if given a choice, I'll buy the cheaper version. Perfect example was the Chronicles of Narnia. We love the movie, but spending an extra $12 for a few more "making of" promos didn't appeal to me. I also record a lot of movies off the DVR (stuff that I wouldn't buy but enjoy watching every now and then). I don't think that's illegal, is it?Mario Kart Wii: 1203 9969 5095

Re: When is too much for when it comes to owning DVD's?

I pull movies and TV shows off my DVR sometimes. Some I put on DVD some I don't. I don't see how in the world that is illegal but some say it is. I just can't understand what would be illegal about me pulling an episode of 24 or Lost off a DVR. I could understand if I sold it, but there is something seriously wrong with a law that stops me from pulling a file off a DVR. Even if I let someone borrow the episode because they might have missed it, I don't see anything wrong with that. It's like borrowing a VHS from someone when you miss a game or an episode of something.Originally posted by caseydI also record a lot of movies off the DVR (stuff that I wouldn't buy but enjoy watching every now and then). That's a tad bit different than renting DVD's from Netflix and burning them to DVD.Originally posted by aukevinI pull movies and TV shows off my DVR sometimes. Some I put on DVD some I don't. To each their own. I never have understood collecting something that you don't or can't use or display, especially when it costs money.Originally posted by forensicdIts the act of collecting. I can understand collecting art. That's something beautiful you can show friends. But a DVD case? Does nothing for me.

But that's just me. I only collect two things in this world: Business cards and cigar bands. The cards are free. The bands cost money, but I smoke all of the cigars on which the bands were once located, so it's all good!

To each their own is right. People have collected huge libraries of books for years and after they are read once (or not at all sometimes) they are placed on bookshelves and just sit. A lot of the time, it is so people can get a "look at me, I am so smart!" sense of accomplishment and come off as an intellectual to their friends.Originally posted by pk500To each their own. I notice the same type of behavior with a lot of peoples' dvd collections, too. People will have all these cult and critics favorites on their shelves, when a lot of the time they don't even like the movies, but want to be seen as cool. It's about as pointless as collecting business cards. Comment

Don't diss book collections, man. After dropping nearly forty grand on an engineering education I view my bookshelf as the supreme testament of my achievement (well that and the diploma of course)! If it comes off as bragging or uber-intellectual, so what!Originally posted by SportsorDeathTo each their own is right. Beats me. All I know is that the artwork on some of them is gorgeously intricate, and they remind me of how much I enjoyed many of those brands the first time I smoked them.Originally posted by aukevinDo other people collect those or did you invent that?

Right. So I take it you eat no junk food and drink no alcohol. If not, then get the Windex out and clean the windows of that glass house of yours before you start tossing pebbles.Originally posted by SkerikI guess you're right, DVD collecting is kind of dumb.

I smoke maybe four to 10 cigars per MONTH and don't inhale. Usually one or two per week, usually when I'm cutting the lawn.

The risk of developing cancer from that much cigar smoking is about the same as the risk of developing diabetes from stuffing your body with junk food and soda. But thanks for playing.
