    Re: Windows XP language question

another computer question. Two employees are living together. One has laptop and the other has a desktop. there's one phone line. Can I put a splitter on the same line and hook up both so they can be on at same time ( only dial up is available in this area) or can 1 just be on at a time. Also if they can, does using the same internet account (earthlink) prevent that from happening? Would they need different accounts?

you can't. you have to actually buy the windows version in that language. The best you can do is have you computer have the ability to read and write in the language of your choice.

from my understanding, you can have 1 computer logged on and the 2nd computer hooked up with a router. correct me if i'm wrong fellas, but splitting a phone line won't let you hook up 2 computers with each having its own dedicated connection.

so you're saying that both would need different internet accounts to be able to go on at same time? Splitting then would work?

Network the 2 pc's via a hub/switch and then on the one pc Dial up Connection (in network settings) do a properties.. advanced.. (check mark) Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection. If you do split the line then do this on each pc. Whoever is connected, the 2nd pc will gain access aswell.

so i just can't split the lines that way. Does a hub/switch work with dial up connections?

There are plenty more examples if you google search "share dialup connection xp".

so i can split the line without using any hub or switch? I got a splitter which allows two phone lines to go into one phone jack but no hub. If I just click to allow other users on at same time on both pcs, it will work?

no it won't work, you need to network the 2 computers, read what was already posted above

You need a hub/switch to network the 2 pc's. You can split the phone line but only 1 will dial-up to the internet and the other will share the connection via network (if you follow my previous instructions). So PC1 needs to be on and booted into Windows for PC2 to get on the internet.

                      1. Hub - connects the pc via network (without this, PCS cant communicate and no internet sharing will take place)
                      2. Shared Dial-up connection allows PC2 to get online at the same time as PC1

Also I think a credential of Sharing the internet connection is that the PCs must be DHCP (might as well leave both PC's at DHCP then)

                      Hope this is makes sense.

thanks guys. big help. What is DHCP anyway? I'll probably go to Radioshack and get the hub. how much does one usually cost?

Just put DHCP in google and it will tell you.

how much does a hub for dial up cost? I do a search but it's for USB 2.0 hub. I can't figure it out. Would a router work too?

It wouldnt be a hub/switch/router for dial-up, it would be for networking the 2 pcs to establish a link and allow them to share the dial-up connection. The whole dial-up sharing is within Windows XP, the hub/switch/router gets the pcs talking to each other.

I would look at Best Buy for a Hub/Switch/Router. DLink has a easy interface on its router. If I were shopping for a router I would go Linksys or DLink. If you buy a Hub make sure its 10/100.
