Re: Windows XP language question
another computer question. Two employees are living together. One has laptop and the other has a desktop. there's one phone line. Can I put a splitter on the same line and hook up both so they can be on at same time ( only dial up is available in this area) or can 1 just be on at a time. Also if they can, does using the same internet account (earthlink) prevent that from happening? Would they need different accounts? -

Originally posted by rubisco43from my understanding, you can have 1 computer logged on and the 2nd computer hooked up with a router. correct me if i'm wrong fellas, but splitting a phone line won't let you hook up 2 computers with each having its own dedicated connection.Comment

so i can split the line without using any hub or switch? I got a splitter which allows two phone lines to go into one phone jack but no hub. If I just click to allow other users on at same time on both pcs, it will work?Comment

1. Hub - connects the pc via network (without this, PCS cant communicate and no internet sharing will take place)
2. Shared Dial-up connection allows PC2 to get online at the same time as PC1
Also I think a credential of Sharing the internet connection is that the PCs must be DHCP (might as well leave both PC's at DHCP then)
Hope this is makes sense.Last edited by e0820; 05-07-2006, 10:16 PM.Comment

So PC1 needs to be on and booted into Windows for PC2 to get on the internet.

I would look at Best Buy for a Hub/Switch/Router. DLink has a easy interface on its router. If I were shopping for a router I would go Linksys or DLink. If you buy a Hub make sure its 10/100.
