    Router Problems-Specifically NETGEAR

Trying to help my mother with her NETGEAR router. I went through all the steps, achieved router connectivity with her laptop, but neither her desktop or laptop can get on the internet.

there are probably some setting that need to be set in the router to the password and login for your internet account

Many ISP's require that you contact them and provide them with the MAC address of the router.

i would contact netgear before contacting the ISP. many ISPs charge extra monthly or do not allow routers at all so him calling his ISP may either get him in trouble or else add $5 a month to his internet bill.

Is there a MAC Address clone feature on the router?

If so, input the MAC address of the machine that was connected to your ISP BEFORE the router was installed. The ISP might be using MAC Address authentication or your ISP's DHCP server hasn't refreshed yet to give a different IP with a different MAC Address. If you check the status of your router (one of the webpages from the router - http://192.168.1.1 or whatever IP the router is), my guess is that it's not getting an IP address from your ISP due to this.

You can find the MAC address of that PC by opening a command prompt (Start >> Run and type cmd) and then type "ipconfig /all" without quotes.

It will be labeled as "Physical Address". Put that into the MAC Address Clone feature in the router.

              JayBee,

Does your mother have a DSL or Cable Internet provider.

I'm assuming she has DSL since you have router connectivity but no Internet. Most DSL connections require a username and password to be used before you get an Internet connection. The protocol used is called PPPoE. You should see this term on the router configuration page.

Enter the username and password that was setup for your Internet service and apply the changes.

                Re: Router Problems-Specifically NETGEAR

Thanks everyone. I went with the direct call to Netgear and a few changes to the ISP address fixed everything. Next question-my mother's virus protection software on her main cpu is AVG Free, and she has McAfee on her notebook. I know that AVG is NOT free when networking. Suggestions???

McAfee will run out after the expiration period then you have to sign up for the subscription. Besides, it doesn't work that well anyway as it is grounded with the IE engine.

                  Do this... [my opinion]

Uninstall McAfee, install AVG, turn on Automatic System Updates, and change the default browser to Firefox.

Oh, and make sure you only have one Administrator account. Don't make regular users administrators. Force them to log into the administrator account to install software. This will cure a lot of mistakes and headaches in the long run.

Would I have to buy an AVG upgrade, because we are talking about two computers? The default browser for both CPUs is Firefox.

No the free version is just free. You can download each on separate computers.
