My sons are only 1 and 2 years old. I have a 52" in the family room that my youngest likes to put his hands on. I just keep a close eye on him when he's in the room. As for my 52" in the basement, it sits up on a glass entertainment center. They both can reach the bottom of the TV, but luckily they really show no interest in it. However, I still make sure they are supervised when they are around both TV's.Comment

Originally posted by RustedWalleyeIt's just as Shawn said, education is the key. I have gone through 3 kids now that the first thing they learned was where not to go around the entertainment center.
I refuse to buy a glass shelf/door entertainment center as that is just opening trouble, but the wires from the systems and everything else can be a problem.
Each kid including my now 3 year old grandson all were given a controller with the cord cut off, first they think its cool to have a controller, they see you with it, and enjoying it, so you might as well including the little one in the enjoyment. Second it also teaches them this is something fun, and I even sat my kids in my lap for short periods of time, especially when playing high action sports games. By the way the original playstation controllers are very secure and solid and are almost perfect to give to a child. The thumb buttons are solid, even to be sucked on as most little ones will do.
That alone teaches wonders. I have never with any of the three kids had any issues with them getting tangled in the cords, abusing the systems, or ruining things around the televisions.
I do the samething with my daughter. I give her a Xbox controller and she sits in my lap while I play games. I let her play the game one day just so she knows that the bottons actually control what you're doing on screen. She's diggin it. She'll be a pro in no time.http://neverfollow.biz (Independent Music Group)Comment

Re: Are you a dad? Do you own a TV?
My 52" has the practically bullet-proof plexi-glass esque front shield. The HD picture is crystal clear and their little handprints don't do anything but leave little handprints that are easily washed away.
Just make sure they understand that it is dangerous to touch wires or climb on the TV or Entertainment Center...etc...
It does get better... my girls are 4 and 6 and they know how to run most of the components in the house better than my wife.Listen to The Remodeling Clay Podcast!

Re: Are you a dad? Do you own a TV?
I have a 3-month old daughter and it is already making me nervous. I am really touchy about by home theatre and gaming equipment. I am afraid I will be too overbearing when she gets near the entertainment stand, but I believe I will be in the whoop-*** camp with the guy above. Getting an old controller is a good idea, I will have to try that one. If I see my Harmony remote in her mouth I might keel over dead.Gamertag: Mizzoufan1Comment

The old remote thing can work for a while, but unfortunately my son learned very quickly which remotes can actually change channels, and he really only wants to play with that one....
FYI, this is a real danger. I do have a friend whose daughter (I believe she was about 18 months at the time) tipped one of their tv's off a table and thankfully didn't get hit. I have a projection TV in the basement that obviously is stand alone (we just monitor him at all times so he doesn't climb behind it when we are down there) and another TV in the family room that is in an in wall built in that keeps him completely out. The key with that unit is to get some type of baby proof latch for the handles of the built in so he can't get into any of the lower cabinets.Comment

Re: Are you a dad? Do you own a TV?
Great thread!
I got my seven month son learning to pull himself up as well. He hasn't quite pulled himself all the way up yet but he will soon. His favorite thing to do is find out what things are. He's tried so hard to get the power cables for our laptops and we've had to keep reminding him not to touch.
I suppose the hardest thing to do is to teach your kids in a way where they understand rather than cry. I hate seeing him cry just because I tell him "no" to the wires. I guess in reality, I am always wondering if he is really starting to pick up on what I am saying.
I get great joy out of watching him scoot around the floor and get into stuff, learning what it is. The most fun I have is teaching him about something he finds.
I love the idea of the gate around the entertainment center though I don't believe blocking access really teaches him anything. That only makes him more curious so my philosophy is to let him experience it. That should help him get over his curiosity and later you will see that he understands what that something is.Comment

I have a 7 month old who is now crawling, and starting to pull himself up on things. So natually he wants to go to daddy's enterainment center and pull on the components, the wires, everything.
My wife wants to get a new TV stand with cabinet doors on them. The thing is A, most HDTV stands do NOT have cabinet doors. And B. I'm worried about over heating inside there.
What are you guys doing to keep your little ones from trashing your entertainment center? Thanks!Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment
