I can't help but feel that when all is said and done, Vista is going to be nothing but XP with a new paint job and a couple of new features. On top of all that, Apple is planning on releasing their next version of their OS at the same time, or before, MS does, which may leave Vista in the dust. We shall see...

So with the (somewhat) steep system requirements for Vista, what exactly can / does it do that makes it better than XP?

My system can run it no problem, but I'm curious as to why I might want to upgrade.

My big beef with Vista is the fact that it's supposed to be the operating system, meaning it should get the computer up and running and then be stable sitting in the background while I actually do computing tasks on top of it.

There's no reason an operating system should have this many bells and whistles, giving it such high requirements.

From playing around with the lastest Beta 1 version, all that impresses me is the interface of it (Aero Glass),he new search features, they also implemented a lot of new security features. The firewall is a lot better than the XP one. As of right now, nothing big in order for me to switch from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate Professional. But Microsoft keeps saying that Beta 2 is the one that is suppose to turn heads. My company has gotten it, but hasn't given them to us yet. Still a lot of time before launch though, so between now and than a lot can be added and a lot can be taken out.

Both OS's are fairly similiar and both ae very stable. I don't see OS Ten's next release being that much better than Vista. They'll both be good and if your in the Apple camp you'll swear by OSX and if your in the MIcrosoft camp you'll swear by Vista.

Me personally i'm looking forward to Vista. And before anyone launches into an Apple vs Microsoft debate, i'm typing this message using Panther.

Well, that's a little bit of an exaggeration.

But my point is that the OS shouldn't be so mammoth that you need a top-of-the-line PC to run it maxed out.

Your right, you shouldn't. But thats not the way to think from the business point of view.

I completely agree. I have a Mac laptop from 2000, and it runs the latest version of OSX just fine (10.4.6). Microsoft needs to get a clue if they expect the majority of people who already own computers to upgrade.

It is rumored to be released in January. Could get pushed back to Feb. though.
