Re: Red Hot Chili Peppers Rip Off Tom Petty?
Ripped off. But as has been mentioned, you could probably do this with a lot of songs these days. Maybe not as stark, but most things are ripped off from something else these days.
The funny thing is, people are objecting to this and calling it a "ripoff" but at the same time nobody gives a damn about all the sampling going on with rap these days. I mean hell, you can steal a melody that a guy like Ray Charles wrote and played and sang, put a drum beat behind it, talk over it and it's a hit song. If that qualifies as art in today's society, nobody should really have much to say about RHCP "ripping off" Tom Petty.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Re: Red Hot Chili Peppers Rip Off Tom Petty?
Neither band/singer is doing much that is revolutionary, so yes, their songs likely do have similarities.
Popular music is not original, so it makes sense that there would be comparisons made if you listen long enough.
EDIT: A similiar thing has been done with Green Day and Oasis. I consider it the nature of popular music to sound the same and do nothing extraordinary. Being similiar sells albums. Being original is often a risk not worth taking financially.
EDIT(Again): I should justify my statement by stating that the Chili Peppers are one of my top three favorite bands. And clearly, their more recent albums have been more about releasing catchy, popular, singles that will sell instead of truly original and unique music. Hell, Californication, was basically an album of catchy singles. Is this a bad thing? I don't know. I found the album to be very listenable, but it wasn't unique. As for whether being "unique" is good for anything, I have no idea. I listen to music I enjoy, without worrying about justifying why.Last edited by Jimplication; 05-21-2006, 10:53 AM.Enjoy football?
