    Radar guns

My dad and I are looking to buy a radar gun (for baseball/softball purposes). But, I notice that they range from a mere $40 to an expensive $1000. For instance, I could possibly buy this $180 radar gun:

Or, if somebody could please explain why this JUGS radar gun is really 4x worth the value of the other one:

Or if somebody could recommed another one in between those that has more benefits for baseball use, please inform me of the site and why if possible.

    Thanks.

    Re: Radar guns

Accuracy and features might be a few reasons there is a price discrepancy.

Also the JUGS gun has the ability to be tuned. Over time radar guns need to be tuned to certain specs to allow for the most accurate results (every 6 months or so). I didn't see that option on the first gun.

JUGS are usually considered near the top in regards to baseball/softball radar guns.

So... you would consider that over the other one? Even though it costs more than a PS3?

Well, see... that's why I'm wondering. My dad and I need one for baseball/softball purposes, and that's all that you need to know.

Basically, I was wondering if, in order to get any kind of accuracy whatsoever, that I would need to pay for an $800 gun. Do you think that I need to, or do you think that it would be okay to settle for a < $200 one?

Reminds me of a guy who called into WEEI the other day and wanted to get a radar gun for his 7 year old. I'm just curious why you'd need a radar gun for softball.

Well, I need it for baseball... I assist my dad in coaching my younger sister for softball who is on a traveling A-ball team, and he wants it for that. And yes... it is important. They top at 52 MPH, and they can have dangerous changeups 10 MPH slower, which is rather drastic.

Anyway, don't ask why he needs it, but he does more than I do, and he wants it for me. For more than pitching, but also for... hitting or something. I don't know what he meant. So, I was just curious.

Well since I pitch, Ill answer this question. The reason the JUGS gun is so expensive and that all major league scouts and colleges use it is because of how accurate it clocks.

The JUGS gun is maybe +/- 1 to 2 MPH off at most, its usually right on the money. The other cheap ones actually clock approximately 5+ MPH under the actual speed.

Frankly, If I were you I would get the cheap one. It will give you a ballpark of what the speed is, and just know that the clocked speed is around 5 MPH slower than actual speed, and your not spending $500 more than you have to.

Edit* This gun is also top quality. But yet again, if your on a tight budget, stick with the cheap alternatives out there
